“Taem, we’re going to be late if you don’t get your cute ass out here in 5 minutes!”
It’s the second day of the New Year but nothing has changed. They’re both supposed to arrive at the annual SMTOWN New Year’s gathering in half an hour’s time but Taemin is already running behind time and Minho is still waiting. In fact, he has been waiting for a tad too long that he has moved from standing at the doorway with his shoes on to sitting on the sofa with just his socks on.
Minho has gotten used to waiting for Taemin but he can’t understand what’s taking his boyfriend so long this time round. When he left their bedroom about 15 minutes earlier, Taemin was already dressed and looked ready to go; And considering how he usually doesn’t care much about styling his hair, Minho thinks he only needs maybe 5, maximum 10 minutes, to find and gather (because Taemin always misplaces) his stuff before he can leave their apartment. Yet, judging from the time on Minho’s watch, it’s been over 20 minutes and there’s still no sign of Taemin.
With no reply from his boyfriend, Minho finally decides to get off the sofa and check on his boyfriend in their room.
“Tae-”
“I’m here, I’m here!”
Along with his voice, Taemin comes striding down the hallway and towards Minho with an annoyed expression.
“I just couldn’t find something really important…” Taemin mumbles.
Minho stops where he is and shakes his head defeatedly, “You really need to change this bad habit of yours. And I mean both your issues with losing your things and punctuality.”
Taemin keeps silent as he shrugs nonchalantly and comes to stand an arm’s length away from his boyfriend. After years of being together, Minho has long figured that his nagging has little effect on the maknae and so, he knows better than to continue and waste any more precious time.
“Come on, let’s go.” Minho says with a sigh, “We need to hurry.”
“Hey, wait.” Taemin stays rooted in his position as he calls out.
As soon as Minho turns around, he sees Taemin raising his hand and tossing something at him.
“Here, wear this.”
Thank god for his athletic ability and Taemin’s nice throw, Minho reacts in an instant and instinctively catches whatever Taemin has tossed in his direction.
He opens his palm to find a small black, velvet drawstring pouch in his hands.
“What’s this?”
Taemin shrugs and looks away, “Just open it.”
And Minho does, realising he should have just done that instead of asking Taemin the stupid question. Upon seeing what falls out of the pouch and into his other hand when he loosens the drawstring, Minho finds himself feeling even more stupid for not guessing what it was right from the start. On second thought, you really couldn’t blame him. Who on earth would toss such a beautiful yet simple white gold ring like it was a baseball?!
Right, Lee Taemin would.
Smiling himself silly, Minho forces himself to take his eyes off the stunning ring and look at his boyfriend.
“Is this what I think it is?” Minho asks the first thing that pops into his mind, “Or am I thinking too much?”
Taemin closes the distance between them and takes the ring from Minho’s palm. Swallowing hard, Minho can only watch as Taemin flips his right hand around, holding it out palm down, before he slips the ring onto his ring finger.
“It’s exactly what you’re thinking.” Taemin finally answers before he says while admiring how perfect the ring is on Minho, “I am proposing… but I don’t take no for an answer.”
Minho doesn’t know how to react. It’s too sudden, too random. Not only is he surprised, but he is also amused, so much so that he is at a complete loss for words.
“Hyung…” Taemin bites his bottom lips nervously, “Say something.”
“You didn’t give me much of a choice.” Smiling, Minho can’t help but tease, “So what exactly can I say?”
“Say yes.”
“Yes.” Minho repeats obediently.
Taemin pouts, “Hyung…”
“Oh come on, you knew my answer was a given right from the start.” Minho laughs as he pulls Taemin into the tightest hug and thinks out loud, “Maybe that’s why you didn’t put in so much effort when proposing…”
Taemin fidgets about in Minho’s embrace and moves himself backwards so he can see his boyfriend’s expression.
“Did you want me to go down on one knee?”
The seriousness in Taemin’s voice makes Minho pause for a moment to think before he replies, “Nah, it’s a sloppy proposal but it’s so… you.”
“That’s good right?” Taemin beams at Minho.
“The best.” Minho nods with a grin before he realises something and holds Taemin’s right hand up, “Where’s yours?”
“Umm…”
“Lee Taemin.” Minho frowns, “Please tell me you didn’t lose it already.”
“I didn’t!” Taemin quickly defends himself as he stuffs his hand into his front pocket and pulls out a similar black velvet ring pouch, “It’s here.”
“You should wear yours too…”
“Well, I was hoping you would-”
Taemin doesn’t have to finish his sentence for Minho to know exactly what he needs to do.
“Perfect.” Minho says as he puts the ring on Taemin’s finger.
Taemin tiptoes to press a kiss on Minho’s lips and smiles, “I have great taste, don’t I?”
“Of course, you do.” Minho chases after Taemin’s lips and manages to steal a kiss back before he smirks, “You chose me to be your husband.”
Taemin chuckles, “What happened to being modest?”
“The same thing that happened to being punctual…” Minho quips and smiles helplessly, “We’re running so late.”
“Let’s go in like this then.” Taemin slips his hand into Minho’s, interlocking their fingers together, and then raises their hands up in the air as he wiggles his ring finger about, “This will shut everyone up.”
“Taemin ah…” Minho laughs as he shakes his head, “The opposite will happen, silly.”
“That’s fine with me.” Taemin surprises Minho with his reply before he adds, “Why do you think I wanted you to wear it in the first place?”
When Taemin smiles at him, Minho feels like nothing, but everything, has changed. Either way, the New Year couldn’t get better than this. Staring at their rings, Minho thinks he can forgive Taemin for making him wait this time. After all, he’s engaged now, and probably the happiest man alive.
Fingers crossed though, let’s just hope Taemin won’t turn up late for his own wedding.
