I miss last summer, when I looked through my big college book and picked out colleges. I went on college tours and attended information sessions. I could've gone anywhere. Yale was awesome, Brown was awesome. And now I'm going to Cornell, the school that I didn't even visit until after I'd gotten accepted there. I don't even know why I applied to ( Read more... )

I'm sorry you feel that way. The reality is that most people do not get into their school of choice, or else the top schools wouldn't be so difficult to get into. But I really don't think Cornell is the school for kids who didn't get into other Ivies. You might be surprised at the number of people who turn down Yale and Brown for Cornell; when I visited, I talked to a girl who turned down Yale and Princeton for Cornell because of the strength of its biological sciences. You can be bitter during your time Cornell or you can turn it into a positive experience where you learn just as much, if not more, as people go into other Ivies and have just as much fun, if not more.

I know that Cornell is great for things like biology, chemistry, astronomy, etc., but I'm more interested in the arts which I'm afraid Cornell isn't very strong in.:\

And I believe that some people turn down other Ivies to go to Cornell. It's just that if it was me, I'd choose Brown for several reasons.

Who are you, fellow Cornellian?

I think you can find your art niche at Cornell-that's the benefit of a big school; there's something for everybody. Have you thought about living in Risley? I signed up to live in JAM because I want to be surrounded by music people. At Cornell, you'll be able to build your own community, much like what you'd get at Brown or any other place.

I'm just a fellow Cornellian. I added you to my friends' list because you are part of the Cornell09 community. Nice to meet you, by the way.

I applied to live in Risley because it sounded like the absolutely perfect dorm for me, but I didn't get in. I'd originally requested a single, but my dad decided that it was too much money, so without asking me, he called Cornell and requested that I be placed in a double. I'm really big on privacy, so that kind of upset me. And it may have been one of the reasons why I didn't get into Risley. Anyway, I'm currently placed in a double in this really big dorm that has a reputation for being very social and noisy. I'm thinking about trying to switch into a different dorm though, possibly Balch. I don't know much about JAM, but it sounds pretty cool. And at least if I had a room mate, it would be someone who was into music as well.

Phew. This whole dorm situation has been one of the reasons why I've been feeling down about Cornell.

It's nice to meet you too.:)

Cornell will be awesome if your open to it deff. i applied ED to cornell and recently i was thinking to myself damn... why did i do that? iv changed so much since i applied like 9 months ago but i still know that it will be great as long as im open to it and i will be im psyched i just forget my reason -maybe because i didnt get to pick like all my friends which is also like missing out on part of highschool in a way. everything will work out
also you wouldnt get into cornell even if you werent smart and diverse and talented and super awesome which im sure you are, iv heard that yale could reject all the kids it accepted and picked another just as good class from what they had left, like college admissions are not fair but everything will work out no worries

i hope this made sense at least a little

Loren Pope is a hack. That was the biggest waste of my time ever. Not only was that book outdated, but it was horribly researched. It is true that Ivy League schools have different ways of looking at each other, but isn't it horribly rash to judge the school of your choice before you've even finished a week of class? The truth is, no one knows what a school is like until they've graduated from that school. Even at Yale, the average alum probably remembers times when he or she wanted to transfer. I understand that you're probably disappointed that you can't go to Yale, but from what I've read of your journal, I suspect you would be more disappointed if you hadn't gotten into any Ivies--regardless of your opinion on Pope book.

Also, people tend not to stay bitter at schools that reject them, they just let it go and grow to love their future alma mater. I suspect if you go to Cornell with the expectation that people will bemoan the fact that they aren't in New Haven dodging bricks and beggars, you will be sadly disappointed.

I had to read that book for AP English last summer. Ugh.

You're right in saying that I'd probably be more disappointed if I didn't get into any Ivy League schools. Mostly because that's what people expected of me, but it's some of my own expectations as well. But I know that there are a lot of small LAC's that are just as good as the Ivy Leagues. And I wouldn't mind going to Vassar, Swarthmore, etc. if I'd actually gotten accepted to one of those. In fact, it's not just Cornell's reputation that gets me, it's the size. I never wanted to go to a huge school, but I didn't really have much of a choice.

So from reading my journal, you probably think I'm a whiny, spoiled white girl who takes everything for granted. You're probably right.

I sort of know how you feel. I mean I didn't apply to an Ivy league schools, obviously. But I'm settling for my 3rd choice school because the others rejected me. I don't feel too good about going, and right now, I don't feel as if I'll like it. If you really end up hating it that much, try and transfer into Yale or Brown. Work your ass off for a high GPA, and I'm sure you can do it. I have faith in you Jen.

I was thinking, more along the lines of how this summer is going to be awesome. Hanging out with you. Our last summer together before college. We've become so close and we've come so far, it's a shame you have to be in NY. I'm going to miss you so much. You really don't have any idea. I mean we're "biffles" lol. We hang out like everyday. So for now, just have fun and enjoy the rest of this summer. Don't get into the "Cornell Blues". Be HAPPY! Although, I know it's hard. I'll visit you whenever I can. Hehe.

Love,
Maggz

Cornell blues. That's funny. Especially since Cornell is Big Red. Haha.

Hopefully this summer will be good. If it wasn't for you, it would definitely suck for me. I just hope we have enough money to take a short vacation or something like that.

Hi-- I found you on one of the cornell communities. & I just wanted to say that I definitely did the whole "ivy tour" thing & absolutely fell in love with yale & brown & spent hours on their campuses. & then basically ran out of time in ithaca & managed to drive through campus, take two pictures, & rush back to the city to catch my plane.

& I ended up "settling" for cornell. & it kind of sucked but you get over it once you realize there are kids dying to get into cornell. being forced to settle for an ivy isn't too shabby. & i think it'll be easier to get over all the rejections when we get on campus.

which is in fifty-two days. :)

Hey, you seem really cool. Are you the Christine who added me on Facebook? Because that would be pretty cool too.

Isn't is crazy that we're leaving in less than fifty-two days? At the moment, I'm really excited, but I'm sure as it gets closer, I'll start to get nervous. Because we're MOVING there. Oh man.
