Technical Help

Jul 30, 2006 12:42

Dear Flist:

Could someone please help me with a technical question?

I want to insert a link in my journal to a longer entry about my evening at Pride.

How do I insert a link?

(sorry I am so ...y'know... ME)

hee...just use what?

If you go here:http://www.livejournal.com/update.bml

and make sure you're signed in, you're in rich text mode.

Copy the web address that you want to link to...go back to the update page and type in a label, like PRIDE 2006 ---highlite it and then click the button that says link on the top right second from the end, it's labeled LINK I believe then paste in your address in the url spot...and then hit OK...that should work.

good luck!

I do it the long & complicated way because I actually type in the html coding. If that's what you'll do, too, here's the steps (and yes, I have a cheat sheet with all the stuff written on it!) lol

1. Go to the post (or website) you want to link and copy the addy

2. Come back to the current post you're making and type the following, omitting the **s:

<***a href=http://www.whateveryourlinkis.com>then type the title of your cut line,Pride, for example***

(I always bold my cut title but you don't have to.)

Hi Court,

Thanks for responding. I have a growing list of LJ codes too.

My text (what I want to hide behinf the cut or link to) is a word doc on my desktop. It doesnt have a url.
I need to copy and paste into my journal....(dont know where...just as a new entry?)

Please dont be bothered with this, unless you are bored senseless.

But thanks. I'll find it!!

OH! this is even easier. It's what all our fic writer friends do, so the whole fic doesn't show on our flist.

1. Go to your word doc and copy the whole thing.

2. Go to your post and type the following, without ***s:

Hey Flist: Wanted to share my adventure in Timbuktu with you all. <***lj-cut text="Pride">then paste your word doc here and close the cut

well, the close cut didn't show up for some reason. to close you type without the *

And because I need specific steps when learning, and maybe you to, too, you just paste your copied address in after typing

sorry to spam. shoulda put ***s in the bolding html, too, but it's <***b> ... Again, you probably already knew that part.

Ok, there's a very good chance that I am the dork here because as I understand it you want to post a link in a regular post in your journal right? And not some permanent link or something layout related?

Anyway, in case I am right (LOL) here's what you do. My Semagic crashed and I don't use rich text so here's what I do when I want to post a link:

1) Let's say the URL is hxxp://abcde.com

2) You want the text to say PRIDE

3) The following six elements need to be written without spaces:

<
a href="
hxxp://abcde.com
">
PRIDE

That's it (again if I understood correctly, it's late ;))

Thank you SMS!!

No, no, I'm the dork here.
To try to be more clear, what I want to do is just to hide part of a very long journal entry behind a link.
So that I dont take up anyone's (flist) whole screen with a story they are not interested in reading.

So I dont have a url to link to, I just have a word doc that I want to make a journal entry, but it's like 3 pages long.

Is that more clear?

So you mean an lj-cut then? The thing that in my last post said "BJ picspam" or whatever?

So you do your post, I don't know five sentences, then your copy/pasted word doc and then three more sentences to tell us all good night.

1) five sentences

2) again the following without spaces
<
lj-cut text="
PRIDE
">

Here follows your actual word doc text three pages or longer

<
/lj-cut
>

3) Good Night sentences.

That should work :D
