Yeah, I've read that seven years is the average amount of time that people own a house (though I'm not sure if I mean the mean or the median). I guess people expect to be in a house long-term, but then circumstances change (like with M and his condition). I owned a condo for about six years and initially thought that I might be there for a long time (I figured I'd never see a way to come and live out here, for instance), but then I ended up selling it (for about 10% more than what I paid for it, so I didn't really have capital gains to speak of--I only got a decent check at the closing because I'd paid down some of the principal, and I don't think that I was significantly better or worse off financially than I would have been if I'd just rented a room instead of buying).
Oh, cripes. I'm sorry! Moving makes perfect sense. I hate it when other people - even parents - have opinions on the life choices you make. You seem entirely competent to judge for yourself how best to conduct your life. I wish you well.

Also, seven years is ages to live in one place. I've not lived in the same flat for more than five yet.
