Reality catches up to satire

Satire, from last May: Romney: "Of course I'll win, I'm the white guy"

Romney turned to the man seated on his left and seemingly forgetting the ten plus reporters in the room said, "Well between you and me, we have to think about the reality of the situation. Obama is a popular guy and his supporters are hell-bent in getting him reelected. There ( Read more... )

Interesting. I don't like no being able to distinguish between The Onion and "real" newspapers. The last time it was this bad was when Bush won the presidential election. I just kept for someone to say "Live from New York, it's Saturday night."

Feel like being social next week? Let's talk in email. I miss seeing you. *hugs*

I've been trying to find the exact quote that the Romney aide said. I'm almost certain that the aide must have intended to say, "Anglo-American" rather than "Anglo-Saxon". I mean "Anglo-American heritage" is a real thing that people say, and makes sense for "special relationship."

Even if that's not what the aide meant, were I the Romney PR people, that's what I'd be saying happened. But I think it's pretty likely that that is what was going on.

I hope.

And the reality that America and Britain have had excellent relations for the past hundred years, and Obama has made them worse, is irrelevant because ... um, because Romney-as-racist makes good campaign rhetoric?

. . . because it's not substantively true.

I keep seeing conservatives claim that Obama is damaging our relationship with England, but those claims have always been based on issues so minor that I'm embarrassed for the people making them. He called the Malvinas the Maldives? Quelle horreur!I admit that I do tend to chafe at what I see as a criticism of Obama's patriotism by conservatives whenever he sneezes overseas and conservatives' perceptions that Obama weakens the U.S. in his dealings abroad, when it seems to me that the relentless attacks on our President for really insubstantial reasons is intended to serve the exact same end, to wit: make Obama (and hence the U.S.) look the weak and snivelling fool ( ... )

I note that you haven't actually answered any of philmophlegm's points. Was this failure to respond to the meat of his argument accidental?

I fail to understand how claiming he'll win due to American racism is the same as saying that his heritage will help him deal with foreign relations, he certainly can't do a worse job than Obama.
