The primary demographic of the American South is Redneck, I imagine.  I’d never consider my Shima to fall into that category, but she does have a certain innovative quality in common with them.  This characteristic comes from having to keep it together, whatever “it” is, with nothing more to put into it than your wits ( Read more... )

She is a special lady. It's neither. Shima is the Navajo word for Grandmother.

What a delightful read! And a perfect response to the prompt. I enjoyed all of the basic workarounds and your particular "voice" but your final few sentences really elevated this piece into something contemporary and thought-provoking!

I'm glad, and thanks! Never thought of them as marvelous growing up. Didn't think much about it at all, it was just the way things were. Have since come to appreciate resourcefulness, though.
