[January first, and the new year's starting off with a beaut of a day. In case you missed it, the video display is tilted upward to a sky of perfect blue, then down, to golden sand and golden skin - winter has just about bleached him of a tan but his colouring has a natural aversion to pallor

Come on, you must be familiar enough with Stockholm syndrome not to be taken in by it.

I think one arbitrary date is as useful as another. Being able to keep track of time has its uses.

Exactly, which is why we're going along with it. Because it makes us feel more comfortable. all I'm saying is if we're going to do that, we may as well be aware.
