Shempre it takes an Atenean to defend UP's value in the face of our very own modern-day Gestapo head. Meanwhile, fratmen take their clothes off (but not their masks) in a symbolic defense of freedom. One wonders why they aren't willing to identify themselves as well...

LOL, I have issues about the Oblation Run din - I never really went out of my way to see one. I thought I was the only one. Pero whatever floats their boat. I wondered the same thing, since supposedly it's an honor for the fratmen to do the run.

He's a pretty cool Atenean. Haha!

"The Oblation Run may very well be the shock treatment this country needs to strip it of the indifference and cynicism that now cover its heart like calluses and its soul like barnacles."

That assumes that the Oblation Run serves as any form of shock treatment anymore, which it doesn't.

Same thing with the activism it's supposed to represent. That is, it's as mundane and lacking of any shock value as a group of naked fratmen running around the campus.

That's the problem with repeating supposed principled actions. The law of diminishing returns takes effect.

You don't remove the indifference and cynicism in the country by repeating the same action that's been causing the indifference and cynicism year in and year out.

It's as if nobody learned from the boy who cried wolf.

Nevertheless, the early Oblation Run was the best way to give Gonzales the finger.

Outside of UP, I think people do see the Oblation Run as something of out the ordinary, so the traditional idea behind it minus much of what it has to do with fraternity politics still stands for these people. If you notice the audience is almost always composed more of outsiders than UP students anyway, not to mention all the press mileage! But you're right, although I don't want to speak for everyone because I really have no basis, I think it doesn't really have as much of an impact anymore when you're part of the UP community.

That's the problem with repeating supposed principled actions. The law of diminishing returns takes effect.

That's the all too familiar story of the Philippines anyway - EDSA, anyone?
