it's our goldfish

Junho buys the most adorable goldfish ever.

It was a spur-of-the-moment thing - he'd just walked past the pet shop and the little orange swimming fish had caught his attention. And then he'd gone in, pointed at that particular fish and said, "I want that one."

Which is why Junho ends up hugging a fishbowl to his chest with his new pet swimming around in circles happily as he walks home, a plastic bag of fish food dangling on his wrist.

He sets the fishbowl down carefully when he rummages in his jeans pockets in search for his keys, and then unlocks the door. Flinging it wide open, he bends down to pick the fishbowl up again, kicking the door shut behind him.

"Oooooh, Junho!" Nichkhun exclaims from the couch, where he was flipping the glossy pages of an English magazine. "Is that a fish?"

Junho nods. "A goldfish," he supplies for Nichkhun, knowing that the Thai prince probably didn't have a wide enough Korean vocabulary to know what a goldfish was called.

Nichkhun beams, walking over to Junho and pressing his palm flat against the transparent bowl. The goldfish swims towards him, tail shimmering behind it like a banner. "I like it," says Nichkhun.

It's mine, Junho wants to say, but stays silent as Nichkhun pats the fishbowl gently like it was the bulging stomach of a pregnant woman.

"Hyung," Junho says. "I think I'm going to go put it in my room first, okay?"

Nichkhun nods. "I'll follow you," he says, eyes still fixed on the - no, Junho's! - fish.

Junho makes his way to his room, navigating around someone's boxers and a banana peel on the floor carefully, afraid that he might trip or slip and end up with a shattered fishbowl, glass pieces scattered around the floor, his goldfish flapping weakly as it dies a sad, sad death.

When he opens the door, though, he knows that it's a bad idea. For some reason, Wooyoung and Junsu had decided to have a pillow fight, and as a pillow zooms towards Junho (and the fishbowl), he hastily ducks out of the way before it can hit him.

"Hey!" Junho yells angrily. His goldfish had nearly died, okay! "Why are you having a pillow fight in my room?"

Chansung looks contritely at Jaebum, who is sitting in one corner of the room, smile still on his face. When he sees Junho standing at the doorway seething, though, the smile vanishes and he climbs onto his feet. "Junho -" he begins, but Junho stalks back out, nearly crashing into Nichkhun as he turns around (the n-th time his goldfish had nearly died).

"Can't even keep a pet in peace," Junho mutters as he makes his way to the living room, Nichkhun close at his heels. He finally sets the fishbowl down in the middle of the coffee table. He smiles down at his beloved pet, mood finally returning to normal as he sees his goldfish swimming around happily.

"I'm so hot!" declares Junsu as he comes out of the bathroom with nothing but a towel around his waist. He focuses on the new object in the middle of the coffee table. "Is that...?"

"It's my goldfish," Junho says sternly, shooting a pointed glare at Nichkhun, who has pressed his face against the fishbowl in awe. "Don't you dare go near it."

Junsu stares at him for a long while, then shifts his gaze to Nichkhun, who is still staring at the goldfish with his face glued to the fishbowl. "Wow," he says finally.

"Wow what?" asks Taecyeon, closing the door behind him as he lets himself into their dormitory. "Oh!"

"My goldfish," Junho repeats. "Mine."

Taecyeon grins, flashing all his teeth. A sudden image of those teeth chomping down on his goldfish pops into Junho's mind, and he shudders in horror. "Don't go near it!" he cries. "Don't eat it, or anything!"

Taecyeon gives him a weird look. "I think I have better taste in food," he says, wandering off to the kitchen to prove his good taste.

Junho looks at his goldfish, Nichkhun's face still attached to the bowl, and sighs. It was going to be tough, trying to save his goldfish from his scary bandmates.

"You're worth it, though," Junho says out loud, beaming at his goldfish lovingly.

Junsu looks thoroughly freaked out by this point.

Junho worries all day when he's out practicing or performing or going on shows. He worries about his goldfish, wonders if it's doing fine, wonders if it's bored, wonders if it misses him as much as he misses it.

He's the first one through the door, squeezing past a confused Jaebum and running to the living room to check on his goldfish. He sighs in relief when it's still swimming happily in its bowl, trademark grin popping back into place.

He worries even more when he goes to bathe. Nichkhun might steal his goldfish and claim it as his! Or worse, taecyeon might eat it. Wooyoung might kill it in a fit of jealousy. Junsu might... Junho ponders about what Junsu might do to his goldfish as he shampoos his hair. Oh. Junsu might sing it to death. His goldfish would die to Junsu cooing I want nobody, nobody but you. Chansung might squish it in his huge bear-like paws while laughing his hysterical laughter. Jaebum might decide that the fish was gay and get rid of it!

Horrified, he quickly rushes out of the bathroom only to see everyone gathered in the living room.

"What!" Junho yells, the dread clawing its way to his throat and forming a lump there. He jumps up and down, attempting to see what everyone is staring at over Taecyeon's head, but fails. He resorts to hitting Taecyeon's shoulders, shrieking "let me see, let me see!"

Taecyeon turns around with a sad look on his face. "Junho-yah," he begins.

Junho stares at him. "What?" He demands. "Tell me!"

Wooyoung pushes his way to Junho, wrapping an arm around his shoulders comfortingly. "It's nothing, it's nothing," Wooyoung says, but Junho doesn't believe it, what with Nichkhun's yells of horror.

He turns to Wooyoung, desperation written in his eyes and the way his hands are starting to tremble. "Wooyoung," he says, so close to begging.

"Chansung, just spit it out already!" Junsu yells. Junho furrows his brows, his heart already knowing it before his brain does.

"Oh my God," Junho whispers when he finally realizes what is going on. He pushes past Jaebum (which is quite an easy task) and Junsu, glaring down at Chansung, who is sitting in front of the fishbowl. The now empty fishbowl, apart from the water inside it.

"My fish!" Junho screams at Chansung. "Give me back my fish!"

Chansung turns his gaze to his hands. "I don't think I can do that," he says quietly. "It's sort of already digested."

Junho nearly collapses on top of Jaebum. "Why in the world did you eat it?"

"I was hungry," Chansung says defensively. "And none of you wanted to cook for me!"

"So you eat a goldfish?" Nichkhun asks incredulously. "Hwang Chansung!"

"I'm sorry!" wails Chansung. Nichkhun just shakes his head in response.

Junho stares at Chansung, then moves his gaze towards Chansung's stomach. He imagines his goldfish swimming around inside while getting digested by Chansung's stomach acids.

Junho promptly faints in Jaebum's arms.

"Don't worry," chirps Wooyoung brightly in an effort to cheer Junho up. "We'll hold a proper funeral and all, okay, Junho? Your goldfish will be properly um... sent off!"

"How do we hold a funeral without the body," Jaebum mutters under his breath, and Taecyeon shoots him a pointed glare.

"So anyway," taecyeon says, plastering a cheerful smile on his face. The sight of all that teeth just reminds Junho of Chansung eating his goldfish all over again. He wiggles back under the blankets.

"Just go away," Junho says pitifully. "Especially Chansung. I never want to see him ever again."

"But, Junho!" Chansung says, and is quickly hushed by someone (Nichkhun?).

"Okay, okay," Junsu says. "We'll go out and leave you alone, okay, Junho?"

Junho nods, although he doubts they can see it from under the covers. But a half-second later, there is the sound of the door clicking shut, so he guesses they must have known how he was feeling.

He sits up, the blanket falling off from his head, and promptly comes face to face with Nichkhun.

"What -" begins Junho, but Nichkhun presents him with a fishbowl with a bow around it, with a goldfish swimming around happily inside.

"I got it back," says Nichkhun brightly. "Chansung coughed it up."

Junho gives him a look. "You're a bad liar, hyung."

Nichkhun pouts. "Fine," he says. "But it's a goldfish, still."

Junho crosses his arms stubbornly. "I want my goldfish."

"This one's special,"  Nichkhun says.

"How?"

"Well," says Nichkhun, smiling. "It's our goldfish."

Junho thinks about it for a while. He could throw a tantrum, demand for his goldfish back (from Chansung's stomach - at this rate, it was probably in his large intestine already) and upset Nichkhun, which would make everyone unhappy. Or he could smile and say okay, and make Nichkhun happy. And when Nichkhun was happy, everyone was happy.

Junho looks down at the new goldfish, and then back up at Nichkhun. "Okay," he says, grinning.
