I am Catholic and agree with you. (lol although probably not as devout as I'd like to be.)

If I take an outsider's POV and observe both religions, I would say that this tradition of fasting is very interesting. In spite of their theological differences, the fundamental idea behind fasting appears to be the desire to become 'less worldly'. Pardon my horrible word choice; it's the only thing I could come up with.
