alas, I'm leaving for Africa in six hours. I should be excited but I'm actually really nervous. so much work to do and so much on the line while i'm gone. and i'm really not that fond of what mong calls 'aminals'. except penguins. but there aren't any penguins in Africa.
in the meantime i know you will all miss me and will crave for more excitement and rip-roaring-laughter from this lj so while i'm gone you can go and pirate some music to remember me by...
TOP TEN RECORDS OF 2003
(ripped of a little by my PinoyDVD post but modified)
10. rainer maria - long knives drawn rainer maria was always my favorite band from the much-maligned 'emo' genre, but with this album they transcend all the elements of the style (including the out-of-tune singing) and deliver something poppy, dancy and jumpy yet still oh so emotional. recommended downloads:long knives, the awful truth of loving, floors
9. the postal service - give up this dream team of death cab's ben gibbard, rilo kiley's jenny lewis and dntel's jimmy tamborello is a great mix of dreamy electronica and soothing indiepop. recommended downloads: nothing better, brand new colony
8. placebo - sleeping with ghosts after their last so-so album, black market music, placebo is back with a vengeance with unforgettable tracks like english summer rain, the bitter end, and sleeping with ghosts. i have a hard time calling them britpop because they rock so much. recommended downloads: english summer rain, the bitter end, sleeping with ghosts
7. american analog set- promise of love i was going to include yo la tengo's summer sun (which is fantastic) but then i came across something better. these guys are part of my favorite movement name: postrock. i mean, what the hell is postrock?! and who would be boorish enough to term their music "post-rock"? bands like joan of arc, american football, tortoise and these guys ,that's who.perfect for lazy days where you just want to read, sleep, eat and lounge around. recommended downloads: come home baby julie come home, hard to find
6. pretty girls make graves - the new romance my favorite new band proves they're not one hit wonders with this intelligent, in your face, go-crazy-while-driving sophomore effort. recommended downloads: all medicated geniuses, the grandmother wolf
5. radiohead - hail to the thief man, for "sit down. stand up." alone this album deserves a place in all top album lists.
4. blur- think tank call me a blasphemer, but this just might be blur's best album. it's thoughtful, melancholy, experimental at just the right places and just so damn good. yes, even without graham coxon. recommended downloads: out of time, good song
3. ciudad- "is that ciudad?" "yes, son, it's me" hoy i'm not being biased ha (i'd be sucking my own dick if i wrote any of the songs... well i did write one so let
s just not count it in this review). i really, really think this album is fantastic. i can't stop listening to it, it's got 17 luverly songs, only for the price of 250 bucks. i mean, man, when are you ever going to find a deal like that!?! available in all tower and music one outlets. hehehe. recommended downloads: anong download download!?! support filipino music! bumili kayo ng sarili nyong kopya!
2. death cab for cutie - translanticism translanticism takes death cab on a slower, more new-wavey direction compared to their last two albums, but the evocative lyrics and heart-stopping melodies are still there. brilliant. recommended downloads: expo '86, title and registration
1. the strokes - room on fire i was trying my best to resist this because the strokes are such rockstar assholes, but this album is just too damn irresistible. and short. they're like the classmate you had in high school who was such a fucking arrogant show-off that you hated his guts but deep inside are awed by his genius. and reptilia is the best strokes song ever. recommended downloads:reptilia, automatic stop, whatever happened?
