Ira is, for all intents and purposes, all bark and very little bite. He comes off as extremely sarcastic and rough around the edges, but at the core of it all, buried underneath a multitude of layers, he's a giant softie. It's not all that hard to break through the barriers he's supposedly built out of protection, though he would like you to think otherwise. The eldest and only son born to a single working class mother who ruled with a stern but caring hand, he's developed a certain roguish charm that has landed him into more than a few unexpected situations throughout his life. Ira's friendly, whether he wants to be or not, and has become somewhat of a magnet for adoration and affection (quite dangerous in his line of work) over the years, much to his chagrin.
During class, he is always cool, composed and witty - charming whilst educating and never without a hand rolled cigarette waiting patiently in his pocket, ready for its caffeinated companion come the first break Ira gets in the morning. Sure it's against the rules to smoke on school property, but Ira doesn't pay too much mind to that. Life's too short for rules and niceties, and Ira would rather not get caught up reorganizing his life and the things he enjoys to please a few tightwads hiding away in some office. And that is the Gospel according to Ira Anderson.
He seems very complicated, but he really isn't. Just give him his smokes, a good book and a decent glass of wine, and you'll have yourself a happy, happy man.

history:
Most will find that when it comes to his history and the life that he's lived, Ira is pretty good at keeping mum on the subject. Uncomfortable when it comes down to talking about himself, he'd rather ignore the question and seamlessly change the subject, a quiet 'It was alright. Just fine,' being the only answer his companion will receive. It's one of the tougher walls he's built up around himself, and most will find that unlike the other flimsy structures he's built out of a means of necessity, this one isn't so easy to tear down.
This isn't to say that his life was incredibly difficult or filled with tragedy; it was, for lack of better words, fairly average. Born to two hardworking parents, his story started out on a happy note, but it soon turned sour with the departure of his father when he was only six years old. Ira will be the first to tell you it had no lasting effect on him ("I'm still here, yeah?"), but the truth is, the abandonment stung. Gone was the single male influence he'd had in his life. With two younger sisters and a mother to take care of, a hard work ethic was instilled in Ira from his early childhood, and it follows him to this day.
At a young age he learned that in order to get anything in this world, you had to work for it, and it's a lesson that he's never forgotten. Quickly, he decided that the best thing he could do, out of honor to the most important women in his life, was stay the straight and narrow - any career that could get them closer to the life that he felt they deserved was the occupation for him.
Needless to say, teaching was the furthest thing on his mind when it came to choosing a career path. Exactly what and who could he take care of with such a career? But when his youngest sister, naive and full of useless romantic notions, became pregnant at just 15 years old - Ira began to wonder if he'd chosen the correct path in life. Even more upsetting was the abandonment of the father of the child - a blatant display of history repeating itself. He'd failed somewhere, he told himself, and it was up to him to find out where; to be better next time, god forbid there should be one.
After transferring schools to once again be closer to home, he rethought his choice in occupation, his sister's pregnancy bringing out a softer, more nurturing side to him that he didn't even realize he'd possessed. After her son was born, he looked forward to being there for him in the way his own father wasn't for him, and was filled with a deep desire to teach him everything that he knew.
It'd be easy to say that this was where he had an epiphany that this was the moment that he decided his new career path would be in education. But it was another three years before Ira even entertained the thought of becoming a teacher, and that was only at the suggestion of his second youngest sister after observing him with his nephew.
It's a fitting career, though it took him ages to even be able to admit it to himself. Ira likes teaching, likes sharing the knowledge and life lesson's he's learned to others, even when they don't want to listen.

● He can't cook to save his life. If dinner isn't being cooked for him by one of his sisters, then it's most likely being delivered. He's often spotted at various fast food joints around the city.
● Ira has an irrational fear of cats. He refuses to go anywhere near them.
● Ira wears jeans all of the time. Jeans are sportswear, casual wear and a divine intervention altogether. If an occasion happens to call for him to dress up, the most they'll get is a blazer thrown over a t-shirt and a well worn pair of jeans. Ira doesn't do formal.
