I have realized that discussion of any sort, in the form of a debate or argument is something I have been neglecting to understand. How then... do I go about learning about it then?

By doing.
I think anything worth learning is something that you have to learn through doing. This means that at first you'll be incredibly awkward, make a complete idiot out of yourself, and have all sorts of self-esteem issues, but there will be shining moments of progress that will likely be worth all the toils.
My approach to these kinds of things always bounce between curious and analytical. I curiously enter these situations, then analyze what happen to improve on it all later. Eventually the process becomes secondhand.

that is a good approach... just have to do it "trial by fire" style! The initiation to manhood begins!
