You know what would be really awesome? If my sewing machine didn't pick while I'm getting ready for a con and to do halloween costumes for Little Miss and such to finally bite the dust. On the downside, I totally just wasted most of my day off shopping for a new machine and then apparently running all of the errands ever. Happily, though, I am ( Read more... )

It is inevitable that something will go wrong before a major event. I just had to buy a new GPS today since the one I was going to use bit the dust. :F

I'm glad you got one that you like and that the sewing (and subsequently, awesome Rayn cosplay) can commence. :D

Yeah, I feel like no project is complete until I injure myself, and no major event is allowed to commence without something going wrong. XD

Ooh, new sewing machine! I need a new one - mine's old as hell. What kind did you get?

It's a Singer Talent. Now that I've had the chance to use it, I'm totally in love. It's an awesome machine for the price.

I envy your sewing skills. My sole triumph with my sewing machine has been to make a pillow case for my husband's travel pillow after the old one bit the dust.

Sewing is something I've wanted to get into and haven't. Any recs for a potential beginner? Glad you were able to get a new machine the same day and will have time to work on your projects. :D

It depends on what kind of recs you're looking for. If you mean in terms of projects, I suggest starting with things like pillow cases and oven mitts that are great practice at sewing straight seams and corners without being overly complicated to put together. I also really like Simplicity's Sew Simple and It's So Easy patterns for beginners. The projects are a little more fun than pillow cases, and they're still really simple. That said, if you want help/advice on anything specific, I'm always happy to help!

My gram taught me some basics back in the day, but I've never done anything with that knowledge other than fantasize about being able to alter clothes someday. I think if I ever find the time and space to start pursuing it, I'll know who to come crying to! XD

Oooh, well if you're making alterations to clothes that are already complete, you can largely do that with one of those little portable sewing machines. Singer makes a good beginner one, and.... I forget who else, but they're awesome if you're space limited and aren't doing anything with super tough fabrics. Like, I wouldn't suggest trying to sew through leather or make a pair of jeans with them, but they're generally good for tops/dresses/etc.
