Author's note: So, three stories ago, I was writing to get it out of my system so I could go back to the very long fic I'm working on and finally finish it. Somehow, when I went to write the next chapter, this came out, and it was too cute and fun not to just go ahead and write it. Hope ya'll like it!
The couch just isn’t comfortable. Ed tried very hard to convince himself that that was the only reason he was creeping down the hallway currently. Honestly, how could anyone be comfortable on that thing? He couldn’t very well sleep on the floor, and the house alarm was on so it wasn’t like he could go get a room without bothering General Roy Mustang.
Besides, Roy had a huge bed. What would he care Ed borrowed some of it?
That was how Ed worked up the courage to inch towards Roy’s bedroom. The door wasn’t closed entirely, but it creaked as Ed pushed it open. In his nervous state, he would have sworn it was a foghorn. He waited for Roy to open his eyes, ask him what exactly it was that he wanted. No such thing happened, and after stilling the hammering in his chest, Ed moved closer as silently as possible.
Moonlight shone in through a space in the curtain, illuminating Roy’s face with a soft, silvery glow. Ed’s breath caught in his throat. Gone was the control that Roy always seemed to have in his waking moments. He looked so open and vulnerable just that it made Ed weak in the knees just watching him breath.
If there’d been any possibility that Ed could chicken out and walk away, it was gone as he stared at Roy. He was captivated by the way the older man’s hair as it flopped unceremoniously over his closed eyes, like a satiny blue-black mop. He wanted so badly to run his fingers through all that hair, but no, touching was off limits. Roy breathed softly, air whistling just the slightest bit through barely open, pink lips, just begging to be kissed. That was stepping over the line too, though. Running his flesh hand over his face, he moved around the bed, sitting on it as lightly as he could.
Ed took the bed in inches, freezing at every squeak of the mattress. Why did it have to be so damn loud, anyway? Eventually though, he was on the bed, lying on the dark, smooth, bedspread, a hairsbreadth away from Roy’s sleeping figure. Despite the dim light shining in, Ed could clearly make out the rhythmic rise and fall of Roy’s chest, moving even his shoulders as he lay, back turned to the younger alchemist.
Just for a little while. Ed convinced himself that he’d leave before he fell asleep there, or at least before Roy woke up. With that determination, he closed his eyes drinking in the warmth emanating from the man next to him.
Oh god, don’t wake up. Ed lay still, shrouded between the darkness of a moonlit night above and the black silk sheets below. There was no way Roy wasn’t waking up. Ed had woken himself with that kick. Damn muscle twinges. Damn having fallen asleep.
Of course Roy would wake up. Ed scrunched his eyes shut and braced himself. Roy would open his eyes and be surprised, only he wouldn’t show it because Mustang was good at hiding that sort of thing. Then he would inform Ed that allowing him to sleep on the couch was not an invitation to take over his bed and what was he doing here anyway? Ed would of course fumble around for some sort of excuse. He could do that. It wasn’t like it was a total giveaway seeing as how he was still completely clothed, minus his shoes and he was still on top of the blankets and well, he couldn’t possibly tell Roy the truth anyway.
That wasn’t entirely true. He could tell Roy the truth… if he had a death wish. Roy liked women. Roy liked women a lot from what Ed had heard. Even if Roy wasn’t partial to the opposite sex, what could he possibly want with someone who was half metal and had only very recently been able to categorize himself as an adult? At the very least, Ed didn’t want to lose his friendship, so the truth was absolutely out of the question.
In the end, it didn’t matter. As Ed worked up the courage to turn his head, fully expecting Roy’s speculative gaze on him, he was met with Roy’s back, bare skin exposed where the blanket didn’t cover. That was a relief.
Ed was tempted to touch him. Roy just looked so good like that, years washed from his features as he slept, like all the worry in his life just vanished in his dreams from the face Ed couldn’t actually see from this direction. It wasn’t that Ed wanted to do anything. He just really wanted to hug him and touch his hair and his face and tell him the truth.
Someday, Ed swore. For now, he’d wait until he was positive Roy wasn’t going to wake up, slip from the bed, and make his way back to the couch. This was entirely too dangerous.
Roy would have shaken his head in amusement, but it would have alerted Ed that he was indeed awake. Who could sleep through a kick like that, anyway? He said nothing. While he couldn’t say he wasn’t mildly surprised, he found the whole spectacle fairly amusing and more than a little endearing.
Oh, eventually he’d let Ed in on the fact that he knew he was there. Eventually, Ed would be brave enough to tell him why. In the meantime, Roy feigned sleep, rolling over and draping his arm around Edward in the most innocent fashion he could.
Ed froze once more. He’d been just about to slip off the bed when Roy’s arm encircled him. The older man’s breath warmed the hollow of his neck, and Ed could feel soft strands of hair touching his nose as Roy shifted in his sleep. Now what was he supposed to do? Even in his sleep, Ed decided, Roy was a bastard of epic proportions.
Roy was bound to boot him out of his house after this. He’d be surprised if the man ever spoke to him again. That being said, he decided to enjoy the time he had. Roy’s lips were less than an inch from his, like the man was just daring him. When would he get another chance like this? Timidly, he pressed his mouth against Roy’s, offering a faint, fleeting touch of lips. The other man didn’t stir. Forcing himself to worry about the morning when it came, he closed his eyes, drifting to sleep for once in a place he actually wanted to be.
