birthdays and Muramasa

First off--Happy birthday, unclemilo! Have a good one!

Second: I beat Muramasa--this includes obtaining all items/swords/clearing the challenge rooms. TWICE.

This was a mildly decent hack-n-slash, and the visuals were great. Music wasn't half bad either.

But this game is no Odin Sphere.

Looking over my gaming history, I've come to realize that what usually seals the deal for me about a game is if the characters are likable. Even the ones that I don't get to play as. Muramasa didn't have anyone I really hated, and some characters I liked, but just were not fleshed out well enough. I think I was really bothered that you only get to play the main two, and none of the interesting side characters/bosses like Torahime or Sayo. Torahime at the very least could have used her own storyline, as she was supporting a great deal of Kisuke's and is related to Momohime. It would have been interesting to see the girls cross paths when both are supposed to be....

SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

dead. Well, then again, if you get the final endings--IT WAS ALL A DREAM. OR WAS IT. (in Kisuke's case, since he had a scar on his back that he did not have previously)

Not to mention, I know we're supposed to be somewhat sympathetic to Jinkuro after he atones for possessing Momohime's body and fails to achieve his goals by using Soul Fusion to save her life--but the fact is that even after he did that, he went and possessed the body of her husband! Who admittedly is a boring jackass who initially would have betrayed Momohime and her clan, resulting in their deaths...but still. Jinkuro was also quite guilty and very cocky. It's weird that he didn't get any lasting punishment, but I suppose if the alternative is to have the Kagami clan killed because Yukinojyo was a complete tool...

I think I'm really just bothered because the rest of the story was narrated literally like 'And Momohime gave birth three times and lived to be a hundred. THE END'...just... fuck what a cop-out. I really expected better from Vanillaware. Kisuke's true ending isn't much better, as I said, it was mostly a dream. So he prevented the entire adventure you played through by killing the badguys and stealing the sword for himself and ending up...in Arizona?! (I shit you not, wait until after the credits and look at the background).

AND THAT WAS HIS BEST ENDING.

WAT.

I don't hate this game, I don't. But after playing Odin Sphere, it just does not hold up to the standards. Better luck next time, Vanillaware.

Anyhow, work now. Later!

muramasa, birthday
