Maybe, but I did find that my suspension of disbelief was sorely tested when nobody he personally knows has a less than fully intact family. I thought the bugs wiped out a huge portion of humanity? But... they were nice enough not to target people important to major characters?

I think the number was half a billion, or about 1/14 of the population. Likely most of that in less developed countries, though it was never specified. Yeah, seeing a few more casualties among the main characters' associates would have been more realistic. But comic books have a long history of alien invasions leveling half the cities on the planet and next issue things being pretty much back to normal...

Sounds like fun, but I've been reading Seanan McGuire's Velveteen superhero universe, and she set a high standard for superheroes.
