Hugo Reviews 2014: Best Novelettes

I've now read all the Hugo nominees for Best Novelette (a category I still think is an unnecessary insertion between "short story" and "novella"), and I was more impressed than I was by the Short Story nominations. That said, nothing stood out as something destined to be a classic of the genre.

That didn't sound like a metaphor for southeast asia's history in the 20th century, unless you just left out the part where the plucky peasant rebels lay low four separate interplanetary empires through sheer cunning, tenacity and bloody-mindedness.

I think the metaphor is more applicable to the experiences of Asians in Western societies, but the Dai Viet in the story do seem to still be resisting the Galactics.
