Otay...
Work today was good. I made bunches of money carhopping, which is always nice. Especially when you know your car needs to go in the shop soon. (don't worry, we're getting to that one)
The starter on my car has been going out. Past few days it makes a bad grinding noise after the engine turns over, but that's all. I knew it wasn't a good thing, but I needed a car and I planned on putting it in the shop after class tonight. (seeing as how I can ride my bike to work tomorrow and don't have class tomorrow night)
My car kind of forced the issue this morning though, when it gave me a long loud grinding noise before starting up.
Methinks: Joy. Just start for me one more time after my shift, and I'll take you start to the shop, okay? Now be a good little car and get me to work.
I go, I work, I make bunches of money (I know I already said that, but so what?)
I get off work. I start the car, and the noise is even worse. It doesn't even start on the first attempt.
Methinks: This is not good. Just get me there, okay?
I drive to the shop. At the light before the shop, the car decides it wants to stall. and die.
Methinks: Fuckity fuck fuck fuck.
I put on my flashers, the hotrod car behind me gets pissy and has to wait a minute before it can peel out around me, and a minute later a lady in a black Ford F-150 offers to push me over. She does, and then a kid in a typical Friendswood style monster truck offers to give me a push start.
My faith in humanity is greatly restored by these people.
The first lady was just trying to get me out of the way, but the kid was awesome. (It's funny, I say kid because he's probably only 18.)
He was a shining example of why the good ol' boys from the South are referred to as the good ol' boys. (This is a good thing, read on)
He drove into the left turn lane (where I was temporarily stationed while I waited for the light to clear so I could run to the car shop and get them to tow me), drove up onto the median and then dropped back in front of me.
He hops out of his car, doesn't say a word to me but looks down at my bumper.
He looks up at me and says "You have a tow hook. That's good."
Methinks: ---- ? (think some combination of w00t and wtf, that was about where I was)
Me: "thanks."
He grabs a rope from the bed of his truck, hooks it to the tow hook and to his trailer hitch. Turns to me again and says "I'm gonna give you a push start. When we get going about 10 miles an hour, I'm gonna honk my horn. Drop it into second and let off the clutch. It'll start right up."
Methinks: Dude, you so friggin rock. (I knew what a push start was, but hey, I wasn't expecting that.)
Me: "Thanks."
He climbs up into his truck and stops in the middle. Turns around and says "Just don't rear end me, okay?"
Me: *grin* "Don't worry, I won't."
We get going, he honks, I let out the clutch and lo and behold, it works.
Methinks: That was kind of fun. Never done that one before.
We stop our cars, he gets out and unhooks the line, I shake his hand and thank him.
He declines the $10 I offer, but promises to take me up on my offer of a free drink at Sonic.
Me: Look, dude, you really helped me out. I mean, here... I work at Sonic. Come in tomorrow and I'll get you a free drink. How's that?
I drive the remaining block to the car shop, and park it there.
Turn off the car, and I don't care that it's not going to start up again. They can deal with that, that's what they're paid for. ;)
I call my mom, and she comes to pick me up.
It's funny. I remember getting a lot of crap from the techies for being from the hick state of Texas, but it's things like that that I'm going to miss.
I don't know much about that guy, I don't even know his name.
But I know that when he saw someone who needed help, he stepped forward.
and THAT is why it was so cool.
That kid wasn't heading the same way as me, I saw him turn around after he drove off.
He went out of his way to help me. He was just one of those quiet people who have so much of an impact on the world around them, just by being nice.
I wonder if any of you will understand this.
