30 Days of Torchwood: Day Three
We continue apace with Day Three. Three in three days! How long can this possibly keep up?
Is it still funny if I keep complaining about how terribly hard it is to choose? How cruel it is to force me pick just one?
Very terribly cruel, that is how much.
I confess to idiosyncratic tastes where particular episodes are concerned. I really love Random Shoes and Countrycide, which are are episodes that seem to draw a lot of criticism for fitting in badly with the rest of the series. I have a slightly unreasonable love for Something Borrowed -- an episode I didn't expect to even really like very much before it aired -- and a soft spot for Sleeper. There's too much packed into CoE for me to pick favorites from S3 with any kind of consistency.
Still, if I had to pick out just one episode that feels representative of all the things I love about Torchwood, though, it would probably have to be Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang. It's sort of like
Chris Chibnall grabbed all the things I love about the show, tossed them into a box, and gave it a good shake.
Cracking Team Torchwood action? Check. Jack and Ianto being shippy? Check. Tantalizing details about Jack's past? Check. Snarky Andy? Check. Gwen being badass, Owen being a sneakily dynamic character with deeper motives, Tosh's libido, and a gratuitous stopwatch moment? Check-checkity-check.
Oh, and that little tiff between Captains that goes down at Bar Reunion, the Jack/Gwen engagement ring UST moment, and tiny guns hidden in amusing places (apparently as per the Time Agent handbook).
In short, KK,BB is an embarrasment of riches, and a great way to get us back into the show after the long hiatus between S1 and S2. We finish with a mystery, too, which never hurts. It's not necessarily where I'd bring someone in who'd never seen the show before -- I feel pretty strongly that S2 very much builds on S1 -- but one could do worse.
Plus, who doesn't love Paul Kasey dressed up like a violent, drug-crazed Blowfish?
