30 Days of Torchwood: Day One
Yikes. No updates since WIAD and this place is a mess. Maybe this weekend I'll bring in a clean-up crew and do something useful.
*blows dust off of various surfaces*
Right. Here goes.
That's a difficult question. Bordering on unfair, even.
Part of the reason I love Torchwood -- especially S1 and S2 -- it that it's such a strong ensemble. Each character brings something to the table in terms of tone and role, which is satisfying on its own, and phenomenally so when we get those heavy action moments where everyone is in sync and lives are in the balance. Cracking stuff.
So, you know, it's hard just choosing one. It's especially hard now that we're so far out from the original cast, and it's been over a year and a half since Children of Earth. The fanon, and the way fandom engages these characters, starts to seep in. So it's tricky, especially because this question asks about a single, overall favorite without any other criteria and context.
And people, I am all about context.
So, given my context in this moment, I'm going to say Gwen Cooper.
*watches as everyone unfriends him*
Er. Right.
Gwen is absolutely fascinating. She's fierce, she's flawed, she's tenacious. She's got tremendous heart and wants to be kind, she holds people accountable, and she genuinely wants to do good. She's also fallible in interesting ways -- Andy quite rightly calls her on losing touch in "Adrift," which is such an interesting data point when you consider how that fits with "Day One" -- and I think the writers have used that to marvelous effect. She's able to be dynamic in ways that Jack isn't, her outside relationships force her to live in two worlds, and the stakes for her are incredibly high.
She's the very opposite of untouchable, and yet she fights the fight anyway to the best of her abilities. I think that's laudable and worthy. She's a big damn hero.
