What is a man's legacy? The things he leaves behind? The things that made him important to people who are left or the things that still make him important to them? More likely I think it was what he was willing to die for to protect. That's the true will of a man right there ( Read more... )

His legacy is the memory of a great name. For those that remain their goal is to cherish their memory and to survive.

My apologies for your loss. Humour can be incredible at times like these.

Let's see...

A fellow accidentally ingested some alpha-L-glucose and discovered that he had no ill effects. Apparently he was ambidextrose.

[You get a nervous chuckle just because Ace has no idea what that was supposed to mean.]

Alpha L glucose?

Oh, it's just a pun. I see it went right over your head.

Oi oi. I got the ambidextrose/ambidextrous part, but I don't know what Alpha L glucose is.

If he died to protect that laughin', then he was a great man, Ace.

Let's keep that laughin' goin' in his memory! A general noticed one of his soldiers behavin' oddly. The soldier wud pick up any piece of paper he found, frown an' say: “That's not it” an' put it down again. This went on for some time, 'til the general arranged to have the soldier psychologically tested. The psychologist concluded that the soldier was deranged, an' wrote out his discharge from the army. The soldier picked it up, smiled and said: “That's it.”

He was. Definitely.

Wait... what?

[Crazy people don't get discharged from One Piece marines. Example A: GARP.]

[He sighs, but doesn't stop to comment or explain. He's used to people not getting his jokes, although he doesn't appreciate it. But he tries again ( ... )

[Axel listens to Ace's words and watches him, intently reading his expressions and just... hearing what he has to say. For a while, there's only silence on his end, as he's not really sure if he should speak his mind or say something ridiculous.]

All long as he lives on in memory, his legacy still goes on, y'know. [He pauses as he's actually trying to keep his voice steady.]

...Inside people's memories, a person lives on forever, Ace. Commit that to memory. [And he stops there, not really sure what else to say.]

Yeah, I know. That's why I'm toasting him.

Right. Think I will too. ['And selfishly for myself also, I guess. There's some shuffling heard then the sound of a bottle being dragged against wood for a brief moment.] Kanpai!

If he was happy protecting those he cared about, and they knew about it, then it's all that matters in the end.

We always knew.

Mah, still wanted to avenge him.

I know what you mean, but think in what he would say if he were looking at you in this moment, Ace-Kun.

....

Let's not go there.

As a rule of thumb, my crew always avenges one of our own. Always. And maybe he would have told me to listen to Pops, but it's not right to let his killer go free.

[Hearing this made him thinks of his father. Rather, the man who actually brought him up.]

His legacy are those he's still protecting, the memories that continues to live on inside everyone...and how they choose to live.
