So, fellow Ontarians, I'm trying to make sense of this GST/PST harmonization thing. Why is everyone saying it's going to make stuff more expensive? Aren't we already paying 13% taxes on everything? Why should it matter whether it's divided into GST and PST or if it's all in one lump?

Thanks. That was the impression I was getting. I wish somebody had compiled a list of stuff that's going to become more expensive now. I couldn't find anything. I heard diapers and childrens clothing is going to be exempt, which is good (although potty training is doing splendidly!). I wonder how groceries and gas are going to be affected...

13% sales tax?
Wow. I thought we had it bad in California with 8%.

It's 5% federal, plus 8% provincial. Or the other way around. Or something like that. Still better than back home. :)

(as if you didn't know taxes were higher in Canada. But we have healthcare!(TM))

Don't remind me about healthcare.

My husband was sick, and had to have CT to rule out kidney and liver damage.
CT is 7000$, insurance covered 5000$. Ouch. The resulting bill made me sick...

Anyway, we don't have federal sales tax, so all of it is state.
