When I have work (I'm self-employed contractor and it's on again/off again) it's all computer based, hours and hours at a time, so it's very convenient for me just to tweet away whenever a though pops up and I have free minute.
Also, my husband's company has extremely restrictive Internet rules: most sites (including LJ) are blocked. They don't allow IM. BUT he can still get to Twitter.com, so he can follow along with my day that way.
You can, but I'm just as clueless as you about how that would work. I'm the slowest texter on earth, and still don't get why that form of communication has taken off so thoroughly. Isn't it easier just to call and leave a message?
Anyway, I Twitter from the Twitter website; it's very easy. Then I found LoudTwitter, which is a free application that automatically uploads all your "tweets" into your LJ once every 24 hours. I'm enjoying it. Some of my favorite magazines and public radio shows have twitter feeds: Mugglenet, The Economist, Planet Money, and I enjoy following their feeds.
