Character Name: Arietta (Arietta The Wild)
Character Series:Tales of the Abyss
Character Age: 16
Background: Arietta was born on the doomed isle of Feres. Even though this was her home, she feels very little connection to the place, seeing as the forest was more of a home to her then any human structure ever was. Her parents were killed in a tidal wave when she was very young, and the toddler who was abandoned by humanity was adopted by ligers, monsters of her world. Ever since that day she has been living with monsters, interacting and existing as one of them. She thinks of the queen of her liger pack as her mother, and her fellow ligers as her brothers and sisters. In living with them she learned to speak the language of monsters, and can easily communicate with them.
At an unknown point in time Van found this girl, and saw that she had enormous potential. Her ability to call on the aid of monsters made her deadly in battle, and having been raised with animal instincts, she was equally deadly herself. She was brought into the oracle knights where she was appointed Fon Master Guardian, and it’s easy to say this is a turning point in her life.
It can be assumed that the Ion she knew taught her most of what she knows about human society. He was the first human whom she had intimate contact with, and became an idol like figure to her. She obviously loves Ion deeply, and took her job as his guardian very seriously. That is why when she was mysteriously replaced as his guardian, her world broke in two. She couldn’t accept the fact that Ion was ‘stolen’ from her, and because she couldn’t blame anyone else, she took out all her rage and hatred on Anise, the new Fon Master Guardian.
Partly because she had no where else to go, and partly because Van offered to raise the island of Feres for her, she joined the Six God Generals, Van’s personal ensemble of warriors and earned the name “Arietta The Wild”. Once the game begins, Luke and Tear end up killing the liger queen that threatened to wipe out a nearby village. However, that liger was the one that raised Arietta, and she made it her personal vendetta to kill them for killing her ‘Mommy’. She first saw the party on board the Tartarus, where she tried to apprehend them, but was forced to flee when she was bested by Guy.
She continued to chase them until they arrived at the Fubras River, where she demanded that Arietta give him back Ion, and revealed her connection to the liger queen. What looked like a tight situation for the party quickly turned on its head when Arietta took a face full of miasma. After she fainted Ion pled that they let her live, and the group fled.
Once the group reached Kaitzuer port, they ran into her again. Arietta was working with the other God Generals in attacking the town (supposedly without Van knowing about it). She kidnapped the maintenance chief, and told Luke and Ion to come to the Choral Castle. They later confronted her on the roof of the castle, where she used her monsters to kidnap Luke. After he was rescued the group confronted her again, where the successfully captured her. Again, Jade intended to kill her, but Ion begged that they spare her life, and have her face justice from the law instead. Arietta was handed over to Van, who assured the group that he would take care of her. He then turned her over to the Order of Lorelei so she could face her sentence.
Arietta was kept in custody for a long while, but after she broke out, she continued to follow orders and pursue the group. In their time separated they were told by Sync the true nature of the Fon Master. The fact that the original Fon Master Ion was a weak boy who would die before he reached a mature age. Ion was cloned, the current Ion that the party knows was the seventh attempt. That was the real reason that Arietta was fired, so that no one would notice the switch. However the group would never get the chance to tell her this, she was fighting on Van’s side, their goal to destroy the world, and thus the Score. She next encountered the group with Legretta and Largo on Mt. Roneal, but the three were swept down the mountain by an avalanche. However, they later learned that the trio survived.
Luckily, the next time they saw her, they were fighting on the same side. Arietta had gotten wind of the fact that the other God Generals wanted to use Ion for their plot, and she could not allow that. She came to the rescue of the party, asking that they please save Ion in return. When they returned they learned that Arietta had successfully fought off Legretta, but was now seriously wounded and was being tended to. She therefore could not accompany them on their search for Ion at Mt. Zaleho.
Sadly Ion could not be saved, and when she learned of his death, Arietta flew into a primal rage. She challenged Anise to a duel, saying she would later name the time and place. They later found her on Feres island, where they learned about her tragic past, and Van’s promise that he would bring Feres back to life. She still assured Anise of her hatred, and said that she would send Largo when she was ready for the duel. She settled on having the battle in the Cheagle Woods, where they had killed Arietta’s mother so long ago.
As a result of the duel, Arietta died without ever knowing the truth about Ion. The last time they ever saw her was being carried away by Largo, limp as a rag doll in his arms.
Personality: Arietta is a strange girl, a combination of beast and human. When you first meet her, she seems like a very shy, meek, and strange girl. She is constantly hiding behind her stuffed animal, keeping it very near her face. However, just because she is slow to open up to others does not mean she is timid. Her childhood with monsters has made it so she has no problem standing up for herself. If something seems wrong, she will complain about it, and defend herself without a moment’s thought. It’s just… despite the time she’s had to adjust, she still doesn’t feel completely comfortable with most humans.
Despite this shyness, she is a very brave girl. She is not afraid to dive into a battle where the odds are firmly stacked against her, and she is a battle hardened warrior despite being so very young. This is possibly because of her pride. She believes very firmly in her abilities, and she has some trouble relying on others completely. She fights for what she believes in, and fights with utmost conviction.
That isn’t to say that she can’t get frustrated. Arietta is very prone to temper tantrums, and lashing out when she can’t get her way. When she does get upset with a situation she tends to deal with it by yelling, and fighting until it can be fixed.
She is also a very loyal girl, if there is someone or something that she cares about, she will travel to the ends of the earth so she can keep it safe, and hers. However this is combined with extreme selfishness. When Ion was ‘taken’ from her, she couldn’t simply think ‘As long as he’s safe and happy it’s fine’, no, she held a grudge against Anise because Ion couldn’t be with Arietta anymore. However if someone she cares about really is in peril, she will put aside her pride and selfishness to aid them.
Another way you can see her animal upbringing is in her idea of justice. If someone does wrong, it’s only natural that they pay for their crimes in the same way. She firmly believed that the main party in the game should die for what they did to her mother, because they killed her. She is the epitome of ‘those who shoot should be willing to be shot at’.
However, she is very caring. For those few people that she is loyal too, she is kind, sweet, and devoted. In many ways she has a different way of showing that sense of caring, but it is there if you look hard enough. It simply takes a lot of time and effort to worm your way into this little girl’s heart.
Abilities: Her first noticeable ability is the power to communicate with monsters. It’s unsure if she can talk to them in their language, or perhaps she simply knows how they function, and thus can communicate through experience. Either way, monsters come to her aid in battle, and make her a formidable foe.
On her own she has abilities and powers. She mostly uses magic and stays in the background using Dark and Light spells like Limited, Negative Gale, and Bloody Howling. The two mystic Artes she knows are Evil Light and Big Bang, both which can be devastating.
Sample Entry: Where am I? Is this where people go when they die? Then where’s Ion and Mommy? I thought I can be with them now? Ion? Mommy? [her voice gets louder as she calls to them]
This place looks really weird. [she finally gets out of bed, walking around] I don’t like it, I want to be with Ion and Mommy!
Ion [original]: This guy is like... her world. He's the one that took her in, taught her how to speak and live in human society. After that he gave her a sense of belonging and a purpose in life. He promised that she would be his guardian, and because of that he would always need her and trust her. This means the world to Arietta, and she loves him unconditionally. Just to clear it up, not 'love' as in 'Ion let's smooch' but the kind of love where she would gladly give her life for him without a second thought. She's hoping to come stay at his house she's totally fine with just like... sleeping on the floor outside his room XD but we'll see how that goes. She definitely doesn't like being a whole block away form him. Anyway, he's been dead for a while, and they've been separated, so she's on Ion overdrive. aka SHE'S REALLY CLINGLY <3
Zuko: He told her a bit about the world. He's actually really frank and to the point, which is good. She thinks he's okay, but is still kinda salty about being here, so she's taking it out on him.
