CHARACTER NAME: Danielle Moonstar - Mirage
FANDOM: Marvel 616/X-Men: New Mutants
CHRONOLOGY: New Mutants, Vol 3: After dealing with Legion, punching making her way back onto the team, dealing with the Dark Avengers

BACKGROUND:
Danielle Moonstar was born in Boulder, Colorado as a part of the Cheyenne nation. Her mutant ability emerged early during puberty and was at first a great source of pain while it remained out of her control. One night she created a metaphorical vision of her parents' deaths. While her parents, William and Peg Lonestar, assured her that it was just a vision, they disappeared shortly after one of their routine trips into the mountains. Dani believed that she had caused their deaths. This vision, made up of the Great Demon Bear, would haunt Dani Moonstar for the rest of her life.

After her parents disappeared, Dani was placed in the care of the Roberts family. After one week the Roberts' son Pat, who was also a close friend of Dani's, provoked her. In retaliation, Dani unleashed her psychic power showing Pat's greatest fear and desire to everyone in the house. Dani ran away into the mountains where she lived with her grandfather, a chief and shaman named Black Eagle. He raised her to learn how to survive in the outdoors and managed to keep the Demon Bear away from her with some of his own spells. Black Eagle recognized that Dani had a power that needed to be better honed. He got in touch with Prof. Charles Xavier to have her brought to his school. Dani, distrustful and already angry, refused to go. However, disaster struck again when Donald Pierce murdered her grandfather in his vendetta to kill superhuman mutants. Looking for vengeance, she agreed to go with Xavier working with other young mutants in his school to defeat Pierce.

After Pierce's defeat, Dani stayed at Xavier's school to honor her grandfather's request and became a part of his new team known as the New Mutants. She would grow up with this team (X'ian Coy Manh, Rahne Sinclair, Sam Guthrie, Roberto da Costa, Illyana Rasputin, Amara Aquila, Warlock and Doug Ramsey) who became her second family, with close and tight bonds. With an affinity for animals, Dani had a rapport with Rahne Sinclair whenever she was in wolf form. Under Prof Xavier, Dani learned how to control her power and eventually was able to manifest not just a person's greatest fears but their deepest desires. With her skill at tactics & strategy and leadership skills, she became co-leader of the New Mutants with Sam. Once her grandfather Black Eagle died, the Demon Bear came to attack Dani. After Illyana struck down the Demon Bear with her sword, Dani's parents were released from the Bear's possession.

After finding X'ian Coy Manh, who Dani thought had died while they were fighting Viper, the New Mutants were kidnapped with Storm under Loki's orders into Asgard. While in Asgard, Dani saved a winged horse from hunters and was then saved by Mist, a Valkyrie. The horse, who Dani named Brightwind, was part of a herd of winged horses ridden by Valkyries. By choosing Dani as his rider and bonding with her through her affinity for animals, part of Odin's (ruler of Asgard) power was granted to Dani making her a human Valkyrie, unheard of in Agard. Returning to Earth with Brightwind, she discovered that she could see oncoming death and in some cases, fight it off.

Soon after their return Prof Xavier left Earth and gave control of his school to Magneto. There would always be tension between Magneto and the New Mutants, even if at times Magneto seemed to want the best for his new charges. One day, Beyonder came to the school looking to recruit Illyana to his following. Illyana did not go with the Beyonder due to the interference of the New Mutants which caused him to wipe away their existence and recreate them, leaving them shaken and in despair. With their lifelessness and doubt, further enhanced by the Hellion Empath, Magneto moved the students to the Massachusetts Academy under the control of Emma Frost who was the White Queen of Hellfire Club at the time. Dani went back to her parents' ranch in Colorado instead, overcoming her despair after reconciling and fighting off death from Pat Roberts and seeing a vision of Odin.

Eventually, Magneto realized that he was being manipulated and the New Mutants left Massachusetts Academy. During an encounter with the High Evolutionary during the Evolutionary War, Dani's power "evolved" so that she could then have her spirit images become tangible. She could only do this one at a time though with a new tangible image, the previous one would disappear.

After a time, Dani began suffering from headaches. Its cause turned out to be Hela, Norse goddess of Death gathering power to take over all of Asgard. Dani fell under Hela's control and in Asgard almost killed Odin until the rest of the New Mutants defeated Hela. Once the fight was over, Dani stayed in Asgard to help with the reconstruction effort and make up for her crimes under Hela's control.

Dani eventually came back to Earth from Asgard with her renamed horse, Darkwind. Back on Earth, she joined S.H.I.E.L.D. and infiltrated the Mutant Liberation Front, causing her friends to believe that she had betrayed them. At this point, Dani refined her power so that she could shoot psychic arrows that could either stun a person's neural system, cause them to relive a traumatic memory, or even kill them. She clashes with the X-Force, Excalibur and Moira MacTaggert while under cover. After a call for help comes to Dani from Asgard, she asks X-Force to help her defeat Hela again. Returning to Earth and dealing with Operation Zero Tolerance, another movement to restrict mutants, causes Dani to stop working undercover and join X-Force.

While in X-Force, Dani was transmorphed into an unstable substance by Arcadia of the Damocles Foundation. After the X-Force won the battle Arcadia restored Dani, somehow changing Dani's powers to control cosmic forces, like Arcadia. When Dani and Arcadia meet up again in San Francisco, Dani's powers were removed from her and a dimensional rift was formed, creating four alternate Dani Moonstars, each representing a different aspect of Dani - New Mutant, Valkyrie, M.L.F. member, and quantum-powered. With the help of the quantum-powered incarnation, Dani was able to stop Arcadia and after the rift was sealed, Dani was returned to normal.

Afterwards, Dani decided to be a part of X-Men part time while she went to college. The Xavier Institute reopened and Dani became a mentor and teacher. During her time there, she recruited several students and became Josh Foley's (Elixir) legal guardian. After the school was rebuilt from a Magneto attack, the students were organized into squads. Dani became the advisor for the New Mutants squad, mostly made up of students she herself recruited. However, after M-Day, Dani lost her powers. She was asked to leave the school for her safety and she did so, saddened by loss.

In Colorado, Dani comes to term with the loss of her powers and is brought in as a consultant to tutor Terrance Ward from the Avengers Initiative. She remains an inactive X-Man until she is recruited by Scott Summers to mentor the Young Mutants with Roberto da Costa. Receiving a tip about a mutant in a small Colorado town, Dani and Shan (X'ian) investigate and find Legion who has lost control of his multiple personalities and is on the rampage. Sam, Roberto, Amara and Illyana arrive to rescue Dani and Shan. Dani quickly becomes a target of Legion's dysfunctional personalities. The fight against Legion causes Dani and Sam to clash as they argue about what she can do now that she is depowered. With a lot of guns, an SUV and a stubborn drive, Dani puts down Legion and is still rebuffed by Sam.

In the meantime, Dani follows Scott as he goes against Norman Osborn. She goes to Las Vegas where she asks Hela for a favor, to be granted the strength to stop Ares, god of war. Dani makes a deal with Hela, later arriving for the final battle with her powers as a Valkyrie Plus and defeating Ares. After the battle, Dani is asked by Cyclops to teach X-Men and has to fight Sam to be a part of the New Mutants. Which she does.

PERSONALITY:
Nowadays, Dani is wiser but still stubborn and defiant as ever. It's part of her core, her history, her family. Very self-reliant, Dani grew up somewhat a loner but is well-known for being outspoken, brave and capable. She's direct, blunt and a doer. Dani has strong morals and principles, which she will stick to until death. And you can take that literally. She's stubborn enough to fight death, if it means the safety of her family and friends. This doesn't mean she doesn't have a soft side. But she also shows affection by roughly taking charge and telling you what a dumbass you were when doing something stupid. Strong-willed, Dani is not a person who gives up easily.

Dani likes to take action and has little patience for people or things that she considers foolish. However, she is fair, intelligent and has an excellent sense of intuition. She is a person who is down-to-earth and has become somewhat philosophical about the fairness of life since losing her powers on M-Day.

Very much in touch with her Cheyenne heritage, Dani is a person who needs open space and time to be by herself. She is comfortable in the outdoors, is very athletic and enjoys living simply. It can sometimes be akin to living like a hermit since she knows how to survive in the wild on her own but she is is deeply caring. She never thought that she would enjoy teaching or mentoring but she cares a lot about the future of young mutants and making sure that someone is there to guide them through life, especially one of a young mutant.

Dani as a teacher is hard-working and responsible. She feels a great need to be the advocate for her students and takes her duties very seriously. She is absolutely protective of her charges. Being a teacher fits her well. As for what she's afraid of, Dani still can't shake her fear of the Demon Bear but she's learned to take her fears head on and will keep on doing so.

Coming into the City, Dani will be suspicious about what the City is after. But she's done a lot of things, like make a deal with Hela and living through M-Day that will keep her rolling along with the punches.

POWER:
So Dani had a bunch of powers before losing her Valkyrie ones at Asgard's fall and her usual mutant powers on M-Day. When she comes into the City, she recovers a few of her canon powers. Before describing that though, even when she was depowered Dani was very skilled in hand-to-hand combat and knows how to handle a lot of weapons--bow, spear, sword, guns, explosives. She's also a very good field leader and strategist. I would say that's part of why she gets to stay on an X-Men team even when she's depowered.  It's something that anyone can learn but Dani has the experience, skills and talent to back it up.

As for her superheroine powers, Dani's power is telepathic illusion projection. She can bring to life people's greatest fears and desires as realistic illusions. She can also create a spirit image of visual concepts from people and herself. With all of these images, Dani can make the telepathic images manifest as psionic energy, becoming tangible entities of solid psionic force. This ability is limited in that she can only sustain one illusion at a time. Dani is not a technical telepath in that she can't read your mind, just pick up specific concepts. With this power back, she can also use her psychic arrows to either make someone unconscious by interfering with neural pathways or relive a traumatic memory.

And for the final note, she still has that rapport with animals.  That kinda quasi-telepathic thing where she can't bend them to her will or anything but can get close to them.

CANON AND POWER UPDATE - Sept 2010:
Updated to the end of Second Coming where Hope "the mutant Messiah" comes back to the X-Men and everyone is at Cable's funeral. For Dani a couple of her team members from New Mutants have come back and most of the mutants are still living on Utopia. Dani is actually going to lose the powers I gave her when I first app'd and instead just get the power to find knives and guns whenever she needs them. No telepathic illusions and no animal rapports.
