Finally, a study that actually proves empathy is damaged irreparably by medical school. I guess in a way doctors have to be able to turn empathy to do their jobs efficiently and without burnout, but the article also talks about the humiliating process of a medical school educations engendering meanness in doctors. Interesting article, since it basically idealizes the 'have fun, build career' strategy of your 20's and 30's and then do the parenting thing when everything else has been done, i.e. in your 40's. Or maybe having kids close to 40 is such a gamble, fertility-wise, that you're just happy you got to have kids at all.

Three countries, four days
It was quite a week last week, starting by our flight out of Barcelona on Monday, then flying to Rome on Tuesday, back to Rotterdam Wednesday and then Switzerland on Thursday. I got so sick of airport security lines but, besides a few delays, I guess everything went pretty well. Though I'm actually happy for once that no traveling is planned for ( Read more... ) -
Barcelona
Barcelona was in the midst of Carneval (sort of like Mardi Gras) when I arrived last night. Plus there was a big soccer match. So people were dressed like clowns and had their faces painted and were generally acting insane. I'm definitely going to like this town ( Read more... ) -

Of course people who don't seem outwardly lonely also get depressed, but I wonder if they are nonetheless lonely inside--not feeling able to be who they really are to the people they should feel close to.
