In the months after the war there is still a lot of work to be done, and Bill works late almost every night.
Each night he is gone, Fleur puts their baby daughter to sleep, singing:
Fais dodo, Victoire ma petite fille
fais dodo, t'auras du lolo
Maman est en haut
qui fait des gâteaux
Papa est en bas
qui fait du chocolat
fais dodo Victoire ma petite fille
fais dodo, t'auras du lolo
The song is mostly true. Fleur is there and Bill will be back soon. Between Molly and George Weasley, Victoire will grow up with all the cakes and sweets she could ask for.
But Fleur’s heart is still heavy. The world is just starting to get light again, but there is still so much to do. The darkness permeates every part of life even as much as the happiness and relief that comes with Victory. Even with her Victoire.
She knows that Hermione has whispered at more than one family gathering that she thinks Fleur might have post-partum depression. But Fleur thinks that it is just the effects of the war taking their toll.
Every day she looks over the make-shift graveyard on the lawn of Shell Cottage, she thinks of the countless victims: her brother-in-law, her friends. People she laughed with, people she loved. She thinks about Bill’s face and how they are so lucky to have escaped with only scars. But some scars are deeper than others, and Fleur can not forgive so easily, can not forget the war.
So at night when here daughter stirs, she sings to her:
À la claire fontaine,
m'en allant promener
j'ai trouvé l'eau si belle
que je m'y suis baigné
Il y a longtemps que je t'aime
jamais je ne t'oublierai
Chante rossignol, chante,
toi qui as le cœur gai
tu as le cœur à rire,
moi je l'ai à pleurer
Il y a longtemps que je t'aime
Jamais je ne t'oublierai
Fleur always spends a long time in her rocking chair waiting. It is dark, but she does not bother to light a candle. Instead she waits for Bill to come home to light up her world again.
