When Will decides to be stupid and obstinate, Elizabeth has her revenge. Whenever he is moody, or refuses to meet her gaze, Elizabeth thinks of Norrington. At night when the men are asleep, Elizabeth can be found panting quietly, her skin flushed red from exertion and pleasure. Though it used to be Will who would cause her to nearly cry out, now there are only her fingers, her hands and thoughts of Norrington.
When she sees him on the deck all she can think is James and she kisses him, just to see if it would be the same as she has dreamed. But it's not harsh and violent, like she has imagined when she is angry with Will; it is soft and tells her quite plainly that he loves her. She steps back to realise that James Norrington has loved her all along. He is the right man, the honest man, and they could have been happy, though when the time had come to choose, she had not believed it. For the first time in her life, Elizabeth wonders if she made a mistake in being so certain of herself.
When a sword gets plunged into his heart right in front of her, Elizabeth crawls--quite literally--back to Will. But when she has nine months to think about the type of man (for she just knows it is a boy) she wants her son to be, she thinks of the man who loved her and who died to save her. When her son is born, she names him James.
