Hey, do you remember when LJ Smith got fired from writing The Vampire Diaries novels? Like, by her publishing company? (The last two trilogies have been ghostwritten by I *think* Aubrey Clark, who also ghostwrote the new Secret Circle novels, which are awful ( Read more... )

But if it's written by the original creator does that make it fanfiction that becomes cannon?

It does not! Because - sadly, I learned all this when she got kicked off the books - Alloy Entertainment has the rights; she basically did work-for-hire stuff under her own name, and that property was developed into a TV show. She doesn't have the rights to either TVD or TSC. Any of her other works, however, she *does*.

Oh that I knew. It's just if the creator is writing fanficiton of her work, because of reasons that make no actual sense, doesn't that still make her work cannon. She's the creator of the work, the world and characters came from her, so even if it's official fanfiction, isn't it sort of unofficial cannon?

It's till kind of awesome though.
