So I'm not sure if this isn't total crap or what...but I just found this beautiful Jason Mraz song and it was so appropriate for this time of year, I just had to crank out a short before the holidays passed us by. So enjoy!!
She hummed “Silver Bells” as she hung tinsel all along the tree, warm comfort radiating from the grate of the fireplace and casting an angel-like glow on her rosy face. This was her favorite time of year, and John knew that he had to make it perfect. The scent of sugar and pine threaded through each atom of the room, Christmas the all-pervasive tone of the week. She knew how to do Christmas right. There was no explosion of holiday garb, no giant gingerbread houses or candy canes; it was just she, the tree, the fire, and he. Christmas had never been so sweet.
Shiny patches of tinsel dropped onto her hair, dusting her nose, and she giggled. She might have been 6 years old again. That night, she felt as if she might go to bed with visions of sugarplums dancing in her head, but there was a giant elf hiding in the shadow of the doorway that had other plans.
She turned in surprise as his sudden voice startled her. Immediately, however, after spying him coming towards her, guitar in able hand, his voice took on that soothing, comforting quality it always had. He grinned as wide as his face would allow, yet still continued his soft ballad, coming ever closer to her with each beautiful line.
What to give the girl who was everything?
All I want for Christmas, you
Here’s my list
I checked it twice
Wasn’t good, wasn’t bad
I was naughty and nice
Had my eye on you all year long
And now I know for sure
I wouldn’t even have to try you on.
She giggled, stringing the last bit of tinsel and turning forwards to face him full on. Fully bedecked in the sweater his mother had sent him, with a pair of antlers on his head, he’d never looked better to her. She wasn’t a crazy psycho about Christmas like some people she’d encountered during the holiday season, but she loved herself some good old tradition, and this was one she could get used to having.
It’s going to be a cold winter
But I won’t need the heat to keep me warm
As long as you wrap yourself around me
On Christmas mornin’
Whether it’s now or later
S’long as it’s before you go, you know
My love is always in your favor
And now you know that
All I want for Christmas…
Is…
Her smile drove him further, for that was where the song ended originally. But somehow, standing before her like a Christmas fool, wearing his heart on his itchy wool sleeve, words came spilling out of him with reckless abandon.
Sweet like a candycane
Hanging from the tree
I will stripe you red and green
When you hit me like a sugar rush
No need for the other stuff
This season you’re all that I need
They say wishing for you
Is like wishing for snow in California
But you know that I can prove them all wrong
Cause my love is true,
I simple adore ya.
Sometimes, when she was stumbling in from a late meeting, she wondered what she had done to deserve someone like him. For he would always be sprawled out on the bed, a book slapped over his face, his shoes still on, always trying to wait up for her. While she lay on the edge of sleep in the protection of his arms, her mind zipped to shock at him still being there. Through everything he had stood by her, by this time she didn’t even know if she would get on without him.
I can’t say that I’ve been good all year
But I’ve been making resolutions to get you here
And if it means being better than whatever, no sweat
Well I bet my halls that I deck for the cause
And santa claus, he knows what my intentions are
Even dismissing mistle toe
So I get to know ya, first of all
Singing oh my god
You’re the reason that I decorate my yard.
His humor never failed to charm her. Without him there, life just seemed dull in comparison. He found comedy in absolutely everything, just as he found romance in subway stations and two star motels. As long as they were together, he insisted, live would sparkle.
It’s going to be a cold winter
But I won’t need the heat to keep me warm
As long as you wrap yourself around me
On Christmas mornin’
Whether it’s now or later
Got to tell you before you go,
That love is always in your favor
And now you know that
All I want for Christmas
All I want for Christmas…
Is us.
“Hiya babe,” he smiled, shrugging off the guitar and closing the final gap between them, “Merry Christmas.”
“Merry Christmas Rudolph,” she giggled, standing on her toes to kiss his nose, red and chapped from the cold outside.
“I hope you like your present,” he pursed his lips, “I worked real hard.”
“I loved it,” she cooed, wrapping her arms around him and burying her face in his chest, “You’re absolutely perfect.”
“Well you say that now,” he chuckled, “but I’m not even done yet, so hold the compliments.”
“Not even-“
She gasped, her eyes closing to keep her sanity in check, as he pulled away from her, only to take up residence on one knee instead, “Love, will you marry me?”
Her heart melted like the candles burning on the mantelpiece. Resented tears pooled at the rims of her eyes and began to course down her cheeks without warning, “Oh my…” she whispered, bringing her clasped hands to her lips. His eyebrows rose expectantly, waiting before they transitioned to full on alarm, “OF COURSE!” she finally screamed, steadying his heart, “Of course! Yes yes yes yes!”
As he slid the ring on her finger, and she looked up into his face, she knew that this Christmas would be one for the record books. He pulled her in for a kiss, and the moment he pulled back, he whispered, “I can’t believe I just proposed to you wearing antlers.”
