The competition of egos.

Sorry that I haven't blogged in a while. I have gotten pretty lazy and if I wanted to rant, I'd do so on twitter. I'd blog only if I have too many thoughts to fit into 140s characters. Well, I HAVE tweeted on this issue but I feel that it's SO IMPORTANT that I have to rant some more. Hurrr.

My dad sent me an e-mail containing an abridged version of ( Read more... )

wah fran. worker's party ok what. i trust low thia kiang and sylvia lim to an extent. but my biggest annoyance about local politics is that what a lot of people gloss over is the good that getting a sizeable number of opposition members into parliament will do. they don't have to be the majority and become the ruling party, besides, it may not be too intelligent to place too much trust in the fledgling opposition parties, but the point is that i think we need whichever ruling party is in place to be challenged and to not rest on its laurels instead of relying on people like nmps to provide the dissenting voice. -_- it is true like you've mentioned that the ruling party has had a history of success (at least in terms of economic efficiency... more humanitarian concerns and its human rights record we'll leave to further discussion) and i suppose one could reasonably say that things are not bad here. but they can always be better. that is the point. and it is difficult to improve when you are complacent ( ... )

HAHA I wish I could vote, but I'm not 21 yet! HURR. When is it anyway? OMG DO YOU GUYS GET A PUBLIC HOLIDAY?!?! :(

Anyway, I agree that PAP has been relatively complacent and they need a bit of a push and shove. But I have doubts that being challenged by opposition would give that push. In the past, in the even of threat, they use threat in retaliation as well. It's like, 'don't piss me off, you meet my wrath and your death'. It's basically their approach to EVERYTHING, down to the graffiti, chewing gum and mandatory death penalty. I admit that I don't know of any other solution. Maybe more checks and balances have to be put in place. Maybe having more opposition members in the government would succeed. But hopefully at the end of the day, their constituents are not the ones losing out.

what matters the most is that people care, and talk about it, and think about it- all else is commentary

But in our society where almost everything is spoonfed, we DON'T think about it. People look at those articles, think, 'hmm..there IS a point there', and they vote accordingly. Not everyone can look at these things critically. My DAD sent me that article. If someone more than twice my age can read that article without questioning its biasness, then it's not really just commentary any more.
