I've played at parties and penny-ante stuff, but I'm not proficient to the degree that I would call it a hobby or consider myself more than basically proficient.

I think you should get some more practice. As in, join the weekly game that some of us have that should start up again in the fall. :) (and, uh, is desperate for people to play...)
