Early news reports indicate that Ike's storm surge was not as bad as anticpated, which is a very good thing. There is still extensive flooding and damage along the coast, but it is not as bad as folks thought it would be. Many people who refused to evacuate are stranded, and are requesting help.

Major bummer.

Major hurricane. Ike is as large as the entire Gulf of Mexico from north to south, and about 70 percent as wide as the Gulf. Its hurricane force winds extend over 115 miles from the center, and tropical storm force winds extend over 250 miles out, as you can see in this image. It will be the largest atomic particle acelerator on Earth, and it cost $9 billion to construct deep underground along the border of France and Switzerland.
