OMG, yay!
You have to go to the East Village! And you should try to eat at Katz's Deli. Canal Street can be fun, but it's pretty much like the Chinatown in any city. South Street Seaport used to be really cool, it had a pirate store, but it's pretty much just an outside mall now. But it is still cool to see the tall ships. All of Manhattan is probably decked out for Xmas, you should go ice skating in Rockefeller Center.
Just so you know, Time Square is the most ridiculous place. I have never seen so many tourists drawn to nothing! I mean, now there's a lot of shopping there, but man. I did New Years in Time Square when I was a kid and man, that sucked so badly.
Most of my family lives in New York and I used to live there as a kid. So half the things I want to tell you to go see if like completely mundane and probably hard for someone just visiting briefly to go see. But if you ignore everything else in this comment, go to the East Village. It's just cool.

Yes, New York is an amazing town. You're going to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, right? If you do, just know you'll be stuck standing around forever, and New Yorkers are not polite. Cool thing is the guy that does the posters for the Macy's Parade was one of my professors.
Oh man, now I miss NY badly. Get a bagel with cream cheese and locks.

Also, omg, just thinking about New York I got a touch of NY accent back D: It'll probably go away by the end of the day.
