Suggestions for speakers on LGBTQ health & domestic violence issues? [eotw]

I'm helping to organize UCSF's conference on domestic violence for healthcare students/professionals this year, and we're looking for more speakers. In particular, we'd like to have someone (or someones!) come present on & lead discussion about domestic violence issues in LGBTQetc communities. As medical students, we get very little training on ( Read more... )

I'm guessing pastors at gay or gay-friendly churches would have to deal with these issues? Either because they'd be doing the counseling themselves (in which case they might be able to come in and speak), or because they'd have someone they know to get in contact with.

I have a friend who's a pastor at a Metropolitan Community Church congregation in San Jose (MCC is, basically, a gay denomination), but that might be a bit far to be convenient for both of you--though he might know people in SF you could get in touch with. But probably if you got in touch with an MCC pastor, or one of the more gay-friendly denominations (Unitarian, UCC, Episcopalian) in SF, they could find someone you could talk to.

Good idea! That would be an interesting perspective to have. My co-organizer's doing the speaker contacts, so I'll pass that on to her.

Thank you!

I'd check with Midori or Violet Blue. Both are pretty well known names based in the Bay Area and are involved....

Thank you! That's an excellent suggestion -- we're looking for all kinds of speakers, not just LGBTQ. Very well-put summary of some of the issues, too.

*smile* I'm excited about this conference, but haven't run anything like it before. A bit intimidating. It'll be fun...I just wish the conference weren't the weekend before my block final exam.

Aw, thank you! I think it'll come together well, and should be a useful day of learning & thinking.

Thank you! Turns out my co-organizer already knows Greg Merrill from her work with LEAP this summer, and it sounds like he'd be great to have at the conference if he's available.

We will be spending one of my Cenering Pregnancy classes talking about domestic violence (among some other things)--the midwives at St. Luke's facilitate the classes. Since Bi and Lesbian women get pregnant too, maybe one of the midwives would be willing to speak. When is your conference?

I would contact SFWAR (San Francisco Women Against Rape) and Women Inc. as well. If they can't do it, they know people who do.
