I oppose SOPA, but I won't be going into why in this post. Instead, I will endeavor to explain why certain issues or topics make or break a candidate for certain voters rather than a comprehensive look at all their stances on every issue ( Read more... )

These are the same people who compare the internet to a series of tubes. I'm sure some ignorant lobbyist is just comparing SOPA to the Drano their minority house worker uses to keep their 8 bathroom house clean. You should read the GoDaddy view on why they support SOAP, warning it sucks and they are now stupid imo. They mention that it could possibly require a "system" in place to monitor web pages for content. They say it wouldn't happen, but if it did oh my god the poor servers. I know it would be just a standard web crawler but I don't see why they are fucking with current perfectly working systems. It's like the wheel isn't round enough for them so they are trying to fix it. If Obama does veto this, he may win my vote. At least I know he'd have more of a brain than anyone else on that Hill. Not including your sister, unless she's actually voting for this. Then I disagree with her politely and she has a brain as well :D

GoDaddy has already withdrawn their support due to massive user protests. If only the government listened to their customers...

In regards to my sister: her congressman is not on the committee, so she hasn't yet looked into it. If it comes to the floor for a proper vote the congressman's staff is to research the issue so he can take an informed stance. I know that she and her fellow staffers do a reasonably good job of researching issues and informing the congressman, but even the staffers who handle technology issues mostly have backgrounds in unrelated fields.

Most computer scientists and engineers seem to be working in their fields rather than for politicians.

"[GoDaddy CEO] Adelman couldn’t commit to changing its position on the record in Congress when asked about that, but said “I’ll take that back to our legislative guys, but I agree that’s an important step.” But when pressed, he said “We’re going to step back and let others take leadership roles.” He felt that the public statement removing their support would be sufficient for now, though further steps would be considered."
