Bottoms Up - Trey Songz

Bottoms up Bottoms Up

What’s in your cup?

Got a couple bottles

But a couple ain’t enough

The logical part of Ariadne’s brain knows she should have stopped three drinks ago.  However, since the logical part of her brain has been soaked in tequila, she happily accepts another shot from Eames.  She is aware of him encouraging her as she downs the fiery liquid.  She slams the glass down on the bar with a loud smack and turns her eyes to him.

He looks slightly fuzzy around the edges.

“Eeeeeaaaaammmmesssss,” she draws, enjoying the way his name falls off her mouth.  She begins to repeat it at a rapid pace until she becomes tongue tied.  He is laughing and somewhere Arthur is frowning.

When Ariadne slides off her stool with little grace, she immediately pitches forward into his waiting arms.

Bad Romance - Lady Gaga

I want you love

I want your revenge

You and me could write a bad romance

“I thought you were smarter…”

Arthur’s voice has a hint of condensation and she whirls, hair flying, and eyes wide.  “Excuse me?” She asks, her voice low.  They are not alone.

“Acting like you don’t know what I am talking about is a tad childish, don’t you think?” He asks, his arms folded, an eyebrow raised.  “I see the way you look at him.”

Ariadne doesn’t need him to define who ‘he’ is.  She purses her lips together, “I can’t help it.”

“He’ll hurt you like you can’t imagine,” Arthur promises, and leaves her standing in the middle of the warehouse.

She turns back to her station, her eyes soon moving from her designs to Eames.

Work Out Fine - Joel Plaskett

But I'll make it to the church on time
Gonna get down on my knees and pray
That everything will work out fine

“You don’t trust me, do you?” Eames asks her one afternoon out of the blue.

She is pouring over a textbook, trying to make up for a missed mid-term.  Someday her excuses are going to wear thin, someday she’ll be asked to leave.  And she finds herself waiting in anticipation.  She looks up to see him standing there as Arthur pours over a file in the back ground.  “Of course I trust you.  I let you in my head, Eames.” She wants to go back to her book, but he places a large hand over it to pull it away.

She reaches for it but he has enough inches on her to have her leaping without grace.  “You don’t trust me with this,” Eames says, his hand falling on her chest to where her heart is beating wildly.

“Of course I don’t,” Ariadne answers.

“You should,” Eames says with a slight smile before handing her the book back.

Stand by Me - Playing for Change Version

No I won't be afraid, no I-I-I won't be afraid
Just as long as the people come and stand by me.

Eames has been watching her carefully for days.  He tells himself that it is part of his nature.  That he is not doing it because he is worried - he is not doing it because he is afraid.

She barely eats, barely moves from where she has curled up on her stool under the pretense of working on their next job.  He can imagine that her nights are sleepless.  Finally he catches her in the bathroom, staring at herself in the mirror.  The bishop lies on its side in the sink.  He wonders if she has toppled it over or if it has fallen on its own accord.

“What did you see?” He asks when she meets his eyes in the mirror.

“What if this isn’t real?” She counters, ignoring his question.  He isn’t sure if it is deliberate or if she hasn’t even heard him in the first place.

Eames moves swiftly, his arms crossing around her waist, his back pressed against her.  “I promise I will make you see that this is real.”

Don’t Worry - Playing for Change

let your heart follow the rhythm
when the voice give you emotion
you have fulfill peace

Ariadne shakes her head, not quite sure what she is doing.  She takes a deep breath, and takes his hand and follows him through the heated streets of Mombasa.  She is trying to ignore the part of her that is telling her she should have stayed in cool damp Paris.  She is much safer there.

Eames doesn’t treat her like the tourist she is.  Instead he points out one building he thinks she’ll like the look of before he pins her against the wall of some ally.  His lips feel surprisingly cool on her neck and she has her palms against her chest.

As his hand snakes under the thin fabric of her shirt, she swears she hears him telling her not to be afraid…

Pursuit of Happiness - Kid Cudi

I'm on the pursuit of happiness and I know everything that shine ain't always gonna be gold
I'll be fine once I get it, I'll be good.

They meet as often as they can.  In Paris.  In London.  In hotels.  In her apartment.

Each time they crash together as if they haven’t seen each other in years.  There are frantic hands, ripped clothes, bruises that they will later beg forgiveness for.

Ariadne misses him their time together ends.  She tells herself it is silly to, after all, there are no guarantees that this is anything more than sex.

Still, she counts down the days until they are together again.

Wave over Wave - Great Big Sea

There is no other life for a sailor like me,

Then to sail the salt sea boys, sail the sea

Ariadne is curled into him, her head resting on his chest.  She can hear his heart beating, strong and fast under her ear.  A comfortable silence has permeated the room and she thinks that this is just what she wants.  Just the two of them, no cares, no worries - no looking over their shoulder.

“Do you ever think of stopping?” She asks, her voice laced with traces of sleep.  She feels him stiffen underneath her and her eyes open wide.

“I can’t,” Eames tells her quietly and she thinks she hears a trace of regret.  “It’s all I know.  It’s all I’ve ever known.  Who would I be?”

I Dreamed a Dream - Glee Cast Version

I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I'm living
So different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed the dream I dreamed.

Ariadne is numb as he enters the room.  She refuses to meet his eyes, refusing to acknowledge him.  If Arthur notices the change, thankfully, he does not comment on it.

She pretends to draw, pretends that things are normal.

It is hard when her heart is being torn into a million pieces.

He has the nerve to come to her, bending his head low, keeping his voice quiet.  “I am sorry if you thought I wanted more.  That is not who I am.”

Ariadne forces herself to meet his eyes, forcing herself to smile when she would rather cry.  “I am sorry too.  Sorry I ever I tried.  Sorry I ever hoped.  Sorry I ever loved.”

He walks away.

Run - Snow Patrol

Even if you cannot hear my voice
I'll be right beside you dear

Ariadne is screaming.

She forces herself to stop, to pull back on her emotions, to let the rational side of herself take control.  Still, as she falls to her knees beside him, she can feel the tears welling in her eyes.  “Oh God.”

In dreams, blood seems to be so vivid, almost blinding to the sight.

In reality, it is dull and flows heavily from a gaping wound on his chest.  His face is peaked with pain and she is moving to place her small hand just right, to do what she can to save him.  He reaches up, his hand curling around her wrist.  She swears he laughs.

“Dangerous business, messing with someone’s head.  You never know…” He trails off before squeezing his hand with as much strength as he has left.  “Silly girl, I’ll never leave you, not fully…”

Lonesome Dove - Garth Brooks

The shadows stretched across the land
As the shots rang out down the Rio Grande
And when the smoke had finally cleared the street
The men lay at the ranger's feet
But legend tells to this very day
That shots were comin' from an alleyway
Though no one knows who held the gun
There ain't no doubt if you ask someone

Arthur doesn’t want her to be a part of this particular job.  In fact, Ariadne knows he has more than once told Morris that they would be better off finding someone else - but she is the best there is and Morris is an arrogant idiot who wants to pull off the perfect heist.  So, instead Arthur watches.   She designs the levels as instructed, she perfects them

And then she waits.

She waits with his poker chip firmly pressed into her pocket, his memory burning a hole in her mind.

Then they go to work.  They are three levels deep when Arthur realizes something is wrong.  He immediately looks to Ariadne, who has been deathly quiet the entire time.  She refuses to meet his eyes.  He is helpless to stop the world from crashing in, from taking the mark with it.

As Ariadne watches the man she hates disappear into the nothingness of limbo, she almost smiles.

“This is for him.”
