I am at home and online. Tomorrow I will be d/l-ing all the episodes of the new Doctor Who and see if I can figure out how to fan vid stuff.
But, for now, Here is my review of Only Human... which I recommend for an interesting read for anyone that likes agood scifi novel. Or mini-novel rather.
After reading all of Only Human... this is still my favourite part. Here's the setting. 2005 Bromley. The doctor and Rose are leaving Jack to teach a Neanderthal Man how to adapt to 2005 while they runm amuk in pre-historical Bromley to figure out who used the rip engine for time travel:
'Isn't rose a better choice for this?' protested Jack. 'She's from this time, she knows the area. Wouldn't I be more use to you where you're going?"
The Doctor hesitated a second. 'Maybe, but I like Rose.'
Though, most like those line because of it's shippiness... I like it because I could just picture it in my head. I could hear the Doctor's tone when he said it too... saying it with an edge of contempt and a trace of ... of... dammit... a trace of something... sarcasm maybe? ALmost as if he was tempted to add on "And I don't like you." Because this is supposed to be taking place directly after The Doctor Dances.
Or at least that's the idea I got with the Doctor being surprised Jack was still there at the beginning. There's still that whole "You nearly wiped out all of humanity because you were an idiot" vibe going on. Now, I like Jack and all, he's hard to dislike because well... he's Captain Jack Harkness but I don't like how so many fan fiction authors treat the relationships between The Doctor, Rose, and Jack.
Most of the ff authors just seem to forget the fact that even though Rose likes handsome faces, if you say... accidentally create a bunch of gas masked zombies that pass their plague through touch and nearly wipe out all of humanity... she's not going to let you just sweep her off her feet. Same with the Doctor (though he does seem to have a blind spot the size the great Wall of china when it comes to Rose doing it ::cough::Reapers anyone?::cough:: me thinks it may be becuase of the whole Nestine Consciousness thing though... kinda hard to dislike someone when one of the first things they do is save your ass) -- so, in short, jack is only around becuase hey, he ended up having a change of heart and saved The Doctor and Rose from the bomb... but that doesn't mean he is still an offical Team TARDIS member yet. he showed regret over his muck up, but he still has yet to make up for it (though evidentally he does so before Boom Town).
After all, as was shown in The Long Game... Rose doesn't like it when humans muck about with history and nearly get her and the Doctor killed. But, she did feel it appropirate to return Jack's favour of putting the bomb in stasis and toting off. However, he's still not too far above Adam on a list of a hundred guys Rose would give the time of day... Adam would probably be like... number 99 and Jack would be in the eighties. For the record, Mickey is like... in the teens or so because he's helped her and the Doctor save humanity (I still don't like him though).
Das' journal was cute. I'm sorry... but it was. And Jack making the note to keep Farscape away from Das because he didn't yet understand the concept of fiction and lying and such. The fact Das only went on a plane because Will and Grace did it on the television was priceless. I giggled at the two sides of the stories between Das and Jack.
Quilley!!! After never knowing what faith was and all that sort. It was nice to know that all in all, faith is the very building block of humanity. It was nice to see that right before the Hy-Bractor as to break through and devour him, Lene, and Jacob he recalled reading about similar situations in books. And his response to the situation was taking their hands and beginning to pray, even though he felt it oddly illogical he understood why they did it. Part of me likes to think it's becuase even though the humans from Quilley's era had no real concept of religion or faith or anything like that... Faith is still a huge part of humanity and what makes humanity so wonderful.
He was one of the few people in his time referred to as a "Refuser" in other words, he refused to use the popper packs to make himself happy in times of trouble... He had spent centuries surrounded by people that didn't really and truly 'feel' anything... So, in essence, he had no idea what his feelings meant or what they were all about. So, it was touching to see him finally understand the underlining need of faith within his own humanity, however minimal it was:
'Looking for humans,' it [the Hy-Bractor] mumbled. 'Kill all the humans...'
Lene whimpered. Quilley couldn't think of anything to do. He remembered reading about hopeless situations like this in the old books, and how he and Elaina [his wife] had laughed at the illogical way the characters sometimes responded when all hope was lost. Now he understood why they did what they did.
He took the hands of Jacob and Lene and mouthes the illogical words silents: 'Our Father, which art in heaven...'
Chantel was just freaky. That's all I can say. Very Very freaky. From the first mention of her as a seven year old that wanted to improve her cat so that it didn't have to pee and ect to her demise via Winds of Time -- she was very freaky. And her ability to take people apart and put them back together again?? Don't get me started, especially when she had the Doctor doped up on the popper packs and he didn't care that she was literally showing him one of his hearts as she dissected him. ::shudders::
Though, headless Rose was amusing I even liked Rose's reaction to watching her body wander around headlessly. Not to mention the whole reason she didn't freak out while watching her beheaded body trying to take commands from her head which was across the room.
The Doctor leaned over Chantel. 'Rose din't just freak. Why? Cos she trusts me. Why? Cos she likes me. Why? Cos, boiling it all back down to your precious drawing board, she's designed to like people who like her. Thank you, blind chaotic nature, big up to you!'
Though, it was even funnier how Rose magically and instantly got control over her headless body when The Doctor was in danger from the cutter being weilded by Chantel. Did I happen to mention, all the the while, Rose's headless body is dressed in only what she refers to as a 'fur bikini' because she had to marry a tribal human in order to get the tribe to listen to her and the Doctor?
Though, that kinda makes me curious as to what happened to that thing once they got back to Bromley. Becuase I never read about whether Rose went back into the TARDIS and changed into normal clothes once Lene reattached her head. I mean, it's kinda like they walk into the TARDIS and the fur bikini is never heard from again. For all we know, once the Doctor and Rose got back into the TARDIS, there was some role playing going on. ¬.¬;; ::shoos away the plot bunnies; kicks one when it tries to bite::
Flipping eggs... >.< I shouldn't have said that last sentance... now I must fic. ::rolls eyes:: as if I didn't already have 5 fics to finish.
