One more week down at my rotation...almost halfway there! I'm pleasantly surpised by te fact that I'm (for the most part) enjoyig this rotation...at least as much as a person can enjoy working 40 hrs a week for free. Today I will remember as the great Heparin shortage of 2010! We haven't been able to get the pre-made heparin IV bags at the hospital and it got to a critical level this afternoon, so my preceptor decided I would be the one to fix it! Today I saw 4 different surgeries! My first one was a full hysterectomy. I stayed up by the anesthesiologist for that one which was interesting...as she was intubating the patient she had me look down her throat a couple times to identify some of her physiology. So during my second week of this rotation a patient came to the counter and had just found out that he had liver cancer.  The prognosis wasn't great but he, his wife and his kids were hopeful.  Yesterday his wife came in and told us that he passed away the previous day....only 3 weeks after his diagnosis.  Just another testament to how quickly your ( Read more... )

I have thoroughly enjoyed have a little break from working and school, but that is all coming to an end soon.  I will be starting my first rotation as well as a job pretty much simultaneously and I think it is going to drain me of all my energy but I look forward to learning a great deal (hopefully!) and making some money ( Read more... )

I've come to realize I'm not about to transition into a new part of my life. While I still have a year of college left, it's going to be far different from the traditional classroom setting. I'm both scared and excited to get out there and into the field. I'm excited to learn something every day and I'm hopeful that I'll figure out where I fit in ( Read more... )

I am so exhausted emotionally that I can hardly stand to think of what happened yesterday anymore. However, i feel it important to write about it, at least briefly so I can look back upon it some day.  Yesterday I brought Oscar in to the vet with what I thought was just a pesky hairball.  Turns out that hairball was most likely feline leukemia....
