She's seven and fascinated by the way the flame flickers every time she takes a breath; excitement making her hand tremble and eyes widen at the spark of light the match throws.
(Little girls shouldn't play with fire. But Kate's never been good with people telling her what to do.)
Then the fire licks at her finger and the carpet erupts before she can stop it. Water extinguishes it quickly, but her heart's beating too fast for her to do anything but stare at the blackened floor afterward.
Wayne's asleep on the couch. He doesn't wake up until later.
(She's twenty-four when he doesn't wake up at all.)
