Her mother laughs and there's so much magic and love in the sound that Kate can almost see musical notes dancing in the air. What she does see is the way her father's face brightens (almost as bright as their Christmas lights), and the smacking kiss he lands on her mother's face as he hands the camera over to her more capable hands.
Kate mugs for her mother holding a Christmas ornament, the flash blinding and leaving dancing spots before her eyes. Her vision clears just in time for her to watch her dad dangle mistletoe above her mother's head.

The pictures are hidden between files of debriefs, tucked away in their own little corner as if to conceal the innocence they still hold. Her hands tremble and her heartbeat ratchets up a notch and somehow she knows before she even opens the flap what the photos represent. What they show.
The last days of a family's naivete. The unassuming smiles and laughter of a mother. A father. A daughter.
Now, there's a murdered mom; a dad who at this very moment is drowning his sorrow, and a woman who will no doubt destroy herself in her quest for answers.

Fast forward a few years and Richard Castle is holding those same pictures in the palm of his hand, trying to help her solve her mother's murder. That she feared one day would be her downfall. Pieces of her past that at one time she wouldn't have dared shown him.
But there's a beautiful trust between them now. A treasured lifeline that formed when she wasn't even looking for one. It's why he was the first person she called when Raglan wanted to meet. It's why....
Awe, you were adorable.
….he's the reason she smiles when frustrated.
He's her hope.
