Kate's voice is soft, hesitant and it catches on the last word when she turns to face him. Fear and uncertainty, hope, struggle for control in her eyes. The tiny wrinkle in her forehead, the set of her shoulders, tells him the same story. Her mother's case is finally closed, and with it, her world has tilted on its axis again, leaving her feeling dizzy and out of place.
“Is it really over?”
Tears cling precariously to her eyelashes, sparkling like diamonds in the streetlight overhead and he can't help find her beautiful like this. But he can't help finding her beautiful in all walks of life - with every emotion that curls around her face and every side of her - even this side, the one that makes him ache for her - vulnerable and wanting and turning to him for comfort when she doesn't know what else to do.
Castle just smiles and reaches for her, his own eyes bright, kissing her temple and softly cupping her face, gliding a thumb over her cheekbone to capture the one rebellious tear that wouldn't hang on. Her breath hitches at the simple gesture and she lowers her head to rest against his chest, hands catching on his shirt as she shuffles closer, seeking out his warmth; more of his reassurance to chase away remaining doubts. Her lips press against his chest, over his heart, lingering there as she breathes him in.
He curls an arm around her shoulders, burying his face in her dark strands as she shudders once, twice, the movements vibrating through his body as he battles to keep his emotions from breaking over them.
“Yeah,” he whispers, and everything about her, about this moment, makes him feel more for her than he ever has. His grip tightens as the wind lightly blows against their steady forms, strong against anything in their path. The rest of his answer slides through the air.
“It's over.”
