Claire doesn't exactly know what they are. This swirling vortex of naked skin and tears and laughter that converges underneath blankets of cotton. The whispered sighs and moans that escape into the darkness long after Aaron has gone to sleep. The fingers that skim across battle scars and lips that ghost along freckled and pale flesh.
She knows they're not a love story. They cling to their ghosts as much as they cling to each other, knuckles white from the strain. Hearts are too lost in the past to see any happily ever after, even one they've unknowingly shackled themselves to.
