The simple words start a fire in his veins; turning sorrow into joy as sheets and clothes scatter on his way to the bathroom to shower.
Before he leaves, Alexis folds her arms around his waist and Martha runs a soothing hand down his arm; eyes sparkling with, 'I told you so,' - a welcome reprieve from the worry that's been there. He wraps an arm around her shoulders, pulling her closer to kiss the top of her head, a grin tugging at his lips. More of the weight of what's happened lifts off his chest, making it easier to breathe. He leaves to go see her.
Really see her.

It's terribly familiar, the long white corridor, the way his shoes squeak against the floor as he rushes past nurses and doctors, the looks on everyone's face as they side-step his determination on his way to her. It's a path he desperately never wants to walk again. (Though, he's not foolish enough to believe he never will.)
Then he's standing in front of her door, but he's frozen, the fire in his veins flickering out. Suddenly, it doesn't seem as simple as walking over the threshold to welcome her back into the land of the living. He presses his palm against the door, swallowing heavily, because,
