We meet in the secret grove. Just like always.
“What if things were different?” he asks.
“I don’t dwell on the ‘I should haves’ and ‘what ifs’,” I reply with a sigh. “It’s a waste of time and brings only regrets and sorrows.”
He nods before pulling me tighter into his arms. We’ll have to go back. To our family, friends, the war… different sides.
But for one moment, I can’t help but break my own rule and wonder, ‘What if things had been different?’
