I'm taking another spin at A Game of Thrones, and finding that I like it better this time. I still don't much care for the characters, but I'm more willing to get caught up in the plot.

But something does occur to me.

Lord Mormont stared out over the edge of the world, into the endless woods beyond the Wall. "Eight thousand years is a long time, maybe," he said, "but we of the black have long memories. The Others have returned." He turned his attention to Jon. "Thank the gods you remembered the fire, Snow."

Jon nodded his thanks, but his mind was not with Mormont. He hesitated, choosing his words carefully. "They say the wood stretches to the ends of the world."

"So they do. Why-"

"And that in all the years since men came here, it has gone undisturbed."

"So they-"

"And there is nothing we care about in the woods beyond this Wall."

"Well, not-"

"Except for the world-ending army of zombies."

"Technically, they're wigh-"

"Who are vulnerable to fire."

"Gods' breath, Snow, what is your-"

"And who live IN THE WOODS."

Lord Mormont was quiet for a moment, as they stared out at the thick, hydrocarbon-rich forest that filled the world before them. Then he said, in a voice quite unlike his usual boom, "Oh."
