Well, it was believed that the number 13 was an unlucky number. Some of it can be attributed to Catholicism, where they hold that Judas Iscariot, the 13th person present on the Last Supper, was the one who betrayed Jesus Christ. As for Friday, it is also said that Jesus Christ died on a Friday, so Friday the 13th is considered as a double whammy for bad luck.
Of course, none of these claims were actually proven true, but the human imagination is quite open to suggestion, that's why the belief still survives to this day.
