Lyrically, I don't think I've heard a better album. It's a well written and fucking terrifying album. I don't think I've had so many chills up my spine as I have with this album.
The album is also very topical, which is a depature for Maiden. Most earlier albums are very seeped in history. This one is far more modern and sounds off on what's going on in our world today: war and religion.
Vocally, yes, Bruce isn't hitting the high notes as often as he used to. But keep in mind Bruce is getting older and they have to work around what he's capable of hitting. I personally like the lower vocals. It's still Bruce though.
The sound, I think is a little lacking. One of the things I loved on the previous two albums were Celtic nods, which are sadly missing from this album.
Overall, I think it's an album you'll have to listen to several times for to really like. It's certaintly not a bad album. Overall, I'm pleased.
I also have a real feeling this album's songs will really come together live.
I disagree with having to listen to it several times to really like it... That's what I had to do with Dance of Death, but this one I loved right from the first listen.
I agree with you on that. I listened to the single three to six times a day from the time it became available on iTunes, and got the album in the post the Saturday before it was supposed to release in the U.S. I've listened to it every chance I get since then.
I think the last three albums have shown great growth in the band. I, for one, don't expect and wouldn't want them to return to their earlier sound. They still sound like Maiden, they definitely still kick ass, and they're sound is evolving. Based on what you see on the dvd, they're obviously enjoying what they're doing, and that's what's most important.
it grew on me i saw the cover and alot of people diagreed with me i thought WTF thats not your usual maiden cover on just about every cover eddie dominated it where as on this its a little man stood in the back and a logo of him on the tank and back cover (this is not eddie it is a logo).
then when i got it and heared a few songs i really did not like it. i did the mistake most maiden fans do and compare it to other maiden albums.
when i eventually sat down and give it a real good listen i actually enjoyed it. end of the day they are getting old so its quite possible it might not be upto the old maiden standards but they are doing one thing most modern bands can't they can still put together and produce a great album.
I was rather disappointed and unimpressed the first time I listened to it, but since then it's grown on my intensely and I think it's an absolutely cracking album. Lyrically chilling and fascinating, musically complex and epic. ♥ It doesn't really have the same sorts of standalone rocking tracks that Maiden albums usually have, but instead the atmosphere of the album as a cohesive whole is stunning.
The songs are all going to be so much bigger when played live, particularly if the fans keep up their usual deafening participation. Imagine These Colours Don't Run with a huge crowd singing along with the anthemic chorus and the oh-so-Maiden whoah-oh-oh bit - fantastic! :D
