So, after paying $200 to fix what Autozone screwed up and paying $45 for a new alternator...the alternator belt broke. That was another $150 to fix. We go to pick up the car, and the guy tells us that the Catalytic Converter (sp??) is completely broken and that I also need new exhaust pipes because they're paper thin

Where have you been taking it?? And it seems like I've known someone driving who didn't even HAVE cats on the car, and it still runs... registered in a non-Metro county, and I think it was illegal... but to answer your question, I don't think they're necessary.
